June 12, 2007 Washington, D.C. - Former Georgetown University women's basketball All-American Rebekkah Brunson was named Western Conference Player of the Week on Monday, as announced by the WNBA league office for games played Monday, June 4 through Sunday, June 10. Brunson earned the weekly honor for the first time in her four-year career. The Oxon Hill, Md. native stepped in for injured teammate DeMya Walker and led the Monarchs to a 2-1 record during the week, averaging a double-double with 17 points and 12 rebounds, while shooting 58 percent (21-for-36) from the field. On June 5 against San Antonio, Brunson scored a career-high 21 points (9-12 FG), grabbed nine rebounds to go along with two steals and a block as the Monarchs won 74-57. On June 9 against the Phoenix Mercury, she recorded another career-high with 17 rebounds while scoring 17 points (7-13 FG) in a four-point Monarchs' loss. Brunson is leading the team in rebounds (8.5 rpg) and field goal percentage, shooting nearly 56 percent from the floor, while ranking second on the team with 13.0 points per game. Averaging better than 25 mintes per game, she is the first Sacramento player to earn the award this season. The former Hoya is the only GU player to ever earn Associated Press All-America accolades and was the 10th overall selection by the Monarchs in the 2004 WNBA Draft. She was a two-time All-BIG EAST First Team selection and was the league's Defensive Player of the Year (2004) and Rookie of the Year (2001). Brunson is the Hoyas' all-time leading rebounder (1,093) and ranks second all-time with 1,762 career points.
