Crew Dominates Season Opener

March 23, 2005

March 23, 2005

Washington, DC--The Georgetown Crew dominated the season opening Jesuit Invitational Regatta on Saturday, March 19th on the Cooper River in Camden, NJ. Georgetown took home the Cannonball Trophy.

The men's varsity eight rowed very smoothly and beat Holy Cross by almost two lengths. The women's varsity finished in second place, ten seconds behind the winning crew from Boston College. In an upset, the men's lightweight eight finished second to Boston College by less than a second. The lightweight women's eight dominated their race, winning by over twenty seconds. The stern four of the JV heavyweight men's eight raced the varsity four and won several lengths of open water. The freshmen/novice crews looked impressive. The men's frosh won by thirteen seconds over St. Joseph's. The open women's eight won by sixteen seconds. The Hoyas also won the men's and women's second freshman eights. The weather cooperated with the crews: temperatures in the mid-50s gave one of the first tastes of spring and the calm conditions made for flat water and good racing. The Crew was supported by a large contingent of parents and alumni who cheered on the Crew and provided a humongous spread of food and beverages for the team.

The next GRA event is the Easter dinner for the team on March 24th in O'Donovan Hall from 7-9 p.m. The dinner is free for alums and their families.

The Women's open crew races this Saturday (3/26) in DC against North Carolina and Indiana. The entire team is back on the starting line on the Weekend of April 2-3: the heavy men race Cornell in Princeton, NJ (4/2). The lightweight men race the Occoquan Sprints on Sunday 4/3. The open women race GW, Boston University and Navy in DC on 4/2. And the lightweight women race Radcliffe on 4/2, also in DC.
