Georgetown Openweights Win Class of 2006 Cup, Defeat North Carolina

March 29, 2008

Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown women's openweight crews defeated the University of North Carolina this morning to capture the Class of 2006 Cup during the Carolina Cup on Lake Wheeler in Raleigh, N.C. The Varsity 8 crew of coxswain Bevin Reilly, stroke Victoria Koke, Christen Scanlon, Danielle Post, Melissa Horne, Meg Ginivan, Kaitlin Roe, Erin Carter and bow Anika DeVolder were victorious in a close finish against the Tarheels.

The Class of 2006 Cup was presented by the five 2006 Georgetown Women's Rowing openweight alumnae in appreciation of their memories and experiences rowing for Georgetown University. The Class of 2006 Cup is to be contested annually between Georgetown University and the University of North Carolina and is awarded to the winner of the first Varsity 8 race. This dual race has been occurring for a number of years, but 2007 was the first year that it was an official cup race.

"The cup is just one way to show our appreciation and dedication to the success of the program and hope that the future rowers of Georgetown University take pride in striving to win it each year," Head Coach Glenn Putyrae said. "We have always enjoyed racing UNC, either in DC or at their course in NC, and we look forward to many years of racing to come."

The Varsity 8 also raced against Duke and Delaware and was victorious against the Blue Hens but fell to the Blue Devils.

The Novice 8 consisted of coxswain Amy Parks, Claire Mongeau, Kate Voss, Sydnei Tolefree, J.J. Fritz, Brett Powers, Lauren Viehbacher, Amy Tenet, and bow Katie Radaeva and finished second to Delaware in the Women's Novice 8 Petite Final.
