Washington, D.C. - Georgetown University Women's Crew took fourth place at the BIG EAST Rowing Championship on April 27 at Melton Hill Lake in Oak Ridge, Tenn. With 85 points, the Hoyas improved on their seventh-place finish from 2007 and their sixth-place seeding coming into the event. "This was a great team event for us because we were competitive in every heat and race we rowed," Head Coach Glenn Putyrae said. "To be competitive at BIG EAST's is a place that we talked about before the season began, as where we wanted to be." Notre Dame finished first in every grand final race on their way to winning their fifth BIG EAST Rowing Championship with 123 points. Louisville finished second for the third-straight season with 105 points and Syracuse followed with 92 points. Rutgers rounded out the top five with 67 points. Connecticut finished sixth with 64 points, and Villanova and West Virginia followed with 44 and 28 points, respectively. Notre Dame paced the field in the Second Varsity 8+ Final with a winning time of 6:51.80. Louisville took second at 7:02.47, while Georgetown finished third at 7:10.94. "I'm really proud of the performances by our 2V8's," Putyrae said. "To row that well and finish third in that race, earned us valuable points and more importantly, confidence going forward." The Fighting Irish and the Cardinals battled for first in the day's final race, with ND edging UofL in the Varsity 8+ Final, 6:43.60 to 6:46.08. The Orange finished third at 6:55.78, while Georgetown took fourth at 7:00.04. The Huskies followed the Hoyas with a time of 7:02.18 and Rutgers crossed the finish line sixth at 7:13.01.
