Georgetown Crew Hosted Head of the Potomac on Saturday

Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown University crew program opened the 2006 fall season by hosting the Head of the Potomac on Saturday, September 30.

The Hoyas kicked off the campaign with a bunch of strong finishes, highlighted by a trio of first place showings in the men's open 8, the men's 4+ and the men's pair. In the open eight, Georgetown was first and third in the three boat race, edging Potomac by over five seconds with a time of 13:59.0. In the men's 4+, the Hoyas (16:32) topped the field of 10, by 42 seconds. Georgetown occupied the top five spots in the men's pair event, paced by senior Dave Carter (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) and junior Chris Griswold (Armonk, N.Y./Deerfield Academy) who won with a time of 18:01.

Georgetown was also second in three events. In the men's club eight, the Hoyas were second of 11 in 14:40, while in the men's club eight, they were second of seven, only five seconds behind Old Dominion Boat Club at 15:31.

The Hoyas were second, third and seventh in the 11-boat women's 4+ event, with their best time being 18:51, nine seconds behind Thompson's Boat Club. In the women's eight, Georgetown was third and fourth of six crews, only four-tenths of a second part at 17:10.3 and 17:10.7.

Also this weekend, the Georgetown men's varsity lightweight squad took part in the Occoquan Challenge in Sandy River, Va. They rowed two boats in the championship eight race, placing fourth (14:16.7) and 10th (14:50.8). The Hoyas then split up for the championship fours, entering three boats, finishing in third (15:42.5), fourth (15:45.0) and 12th (15:36.6)
