Washington, D.C. - Georgetown Crew will take part in the Ninth Annual Jesuit Invitational Regatta this Saturday, March 15. The event, hosted by Saint Joseph's (Pa.), will take place on the Cooper River Park course in Pennsauken, N.J. Schedule of Events:
There are three awards given to the Men's V8 Champion, the Women's V8 Champion and the Team Champion. The Men's V8 Champion receives the Casey Ferrone Memorial Trophy, the Women's V8 Champion earns the Robert Gillin, Jr. Memorial Trophy and the Team Champion will be rewarded with the Jesuit Cannonball Trophy. The Cannonball Trophy's significance dates back to the 16th century when in 1521, Saint Ignatius Loyola had his right leg shattered by a cannonball in an attempt to defend the Spanish border fortress of Pamplona against French artillery. His French captors, impressed by Ignatius' courage, carried him to his family's home at Loyola. During his convalescence Ignatius read the only books that were available to him -religious books n Christ and the lives of the saints. These books and the isolation of the recovery period brought about his conversion that led to the founding of the Jesuits. In effect, this cannonball was the impetus for the Jesuit order. The Cannonball Trophy serves as a reminder that all good things start with pain. The glory of winning is only possible by withstanding the mental and physical pain of the 2000m race course. The trophy is awarded to the school with the highest combined points from today's racing. The Cannonball Trophy is a traveling trophy which the winner returns each year. The winning team receives a small cannonball that is theirs to keep as a reminder on their championship performance.
