Georgetown Field Hockey Shut Out at Providence

Sept. 15, 2007

Box Score

Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown University field hockey program will have to wait for its first BIG EAST Conference win since becoming a full-member of the league in 2006. The Hoyas were shut out by the Friars, 5-0, today at the Friar Field Hockey and Lacrosse Complex as Providence extended its win streak to five games and remains undefeated at home. The Hoyas drop to 1-6 on the season with a 0-1 mark in BIG EAST Conference play. The Friars improve to 5-2 with a 1-0 record in conference action.

Providence came out to a roaring start taking 16 shots in the first half alone to a mere three from Georgetown. PC's Michalagh Stoddard scored the game-winner in the 10th minute of regulation, quickly setting the tone for the day. Two additional tallies in the first stanza gave the Friars a comfortable 3-0 lead going into the break.

In the second half, Georgetown's defensive line stepped it up to hold Providence to just seven shots. However, PC connected on two of those shots to find the back of the cage for the 5-0 win.

Providence outshot Georgetown, 23-6, and created nine penalty corners to Georgetown's six. The second half of play displayed a much closer match than the first as Georgetown led in penalty corners (3-2) and had a .667 shot-on-goal percentage.

Junior goalkeeper Deirdre Crovo (Millersville, Md./Severna Park) tallied a season-high nine saves and allowed five goals.

The Hoyas look to bounce back from today's shutout when they take on Brown tomorrow, September 16 in a non-conference matchup.
