Field Hockey Loses Overtime Heartbreaker to Davidson

Oct. 8, 2005

Box Score

Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown field hockey team (3-7) lost a 3-2 nail-biter to the Davidson Wildcats (3-7) in overtime this afternoon at Belk Turf Field. This is the sixth time this year the Hoyas have lost by one goal, and the second in overtime.

Both teams were fairly aggressive today, however the Wildcats were able to create a few more opportunities by out shooting the Hoyas, 14-8, and led in corners, 11-6.

Davidson struck first when Misty Stallings scored an unassisted goal past GU goalkeeper Abby Winer (Rising Sun, Md.) to put Davidson up 1-0 at 15:13. Less than three minutes later, senior defender Tara Mead (Wellesley, Mass.) scored on a breakaway to even the score at one. At 28:38, Davidson found the goal again when Ginnie Friddell found an open Britti Himelfarb who scored to push the Wildcats ahead 2-1 going into the half.

The second half was tamer as both teams reverted to more defensive play. However, at 59:30, freshman forward Maggie Farrand (Baltimore, Md.) received a pass from sophomore Lauren Sheets (Lutherville, Md.) for the equalizing goal, sending the game to overtime.

The overtime was short-lived and saw only one shot, taken by the Wildcats. Davidson's Britti Himelfarb broke through the Georgetown defense to take on GU's Winer one-on-one. She shot it past Winer for the game-winning goal, 3:17 into the extra session.

Georgetown's scheduled game tomorrow against Appalachian State has been postponed. The Hoyas return to action on Wednesday, Oct. 12 when Georgetown hosts UMBC at 3:30 p.m. on Kehoe Field.
