Georgetown Field Hockey Takes on Davidson and Defending NCAA Champion North Carolina This Weekend

Sept. 4, 2008

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Georgetown field hockey team (0-2) travels south to take on Davidson (0-2) on Friday and will stay through the weekend to play defending NCAA champion North Carolina (1-1) on Sunday during the second weekend of action in 2008.

In its first weekend of play the Hoyas, starting four freshmen, and three more earning minutes, showed signs of growth at the Ohio University Tournament.

Against the No. 20 ranked Ohio Bobcats, senior goalkeeper Dee Crovo (Millersville, Md./Severna Park) kept the Hoyas close in the first half making six of her 11 saves early. Ohio opened a 3-0 lead into the second half, but GU rallied behind a goal from senior forward Maggie Farrand (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr) and another from sophomore Micaela O'Toole (Alexandria, Va./St. Stephen's & St. Agnes) coming just over a minute apart. The comeback would be stopped short, as the Hoyas could not muster any more offense.

Saint Louis proved to be a tough matchup for the Blue and Gray. GU kept the Billikens offense quiet in the first half, but allowed three second half goals to fall 4-0, dropping to 0-2.

The Hoyas first opponent of the weekend, Davidson, fell in both of its opening weekend games, including a 5-0 loss to Miami of Ohio and a 2-0 loss to Ball State. Senior Brittany Rollek and junior Christa Goeke each started a game in goal for the Wildcats.

The Tar Heels split their opening weekend in the ACC-Big Ten Challenge in Winston-Salem, N.C., defeating Michigan 6-0, before falling to Iowa 3-2. Junior forward Danielle Forword was named ACC Player of the Week, scoring five goals in the first two games.
