GU Women's Golf Team is Fourth Heading into Final Day of BIG EAST Championships

4/25/2004

SOUTH BEND, IND. - The Georgetown University women's golf team, making its second-straight appearance in the BIG EAST Conference Women's Golf Championship, enter the second day of competition in fourth place.  The Notre Dame Fighting Irish hold the lead at the league championship after the first two rounds of play Saturday, April 24, at the Warren Golf Course. The Irish women have opened up an 18-shot advantage over Boston College as they prepare for the final 18 holes on Sunday.

For the women, Notre Dame is a full 22 shots better than the pace it set in last year's inaugural BIG EAST Women's Golf Championship, registering scores of 302 and 293 for a 19-over par 595. The second-round 293 represents the first sub-300 score in the brief history of the BIG EAST women's tourney. Boston College and Miami were tied for second place after the first round at 306, but the Eagles nudged ahead of the Hurricanes with a 307 in the second round, one stroke better than Miami on the par-72, 6,003-yard Warren setup. Georgetown completes the four-team women's field with a 640 (318-322).

In the individual race, Notre Dame's Noriko Nakazaki and Boston College's Alison Walshe are tied for first place at one-over par 145. Walshe fired an opening-round score of one-under par 71, which was the lowest score in tournament history at the time. However, it lasted only 18 holes as Nakazaki bested her with a two-under par 70 in the second round. Walshe ended up with rounds of 71 and 74, while Nakazaki posted scores of 75 and 70 on the first day.

The Hoyas’ Christy Larrimore (So., Severna Park, Md./Archbishop Spaulding) enters the last day of competition in third place after shooting a 72 and 76 for 148 (+4).  Nicole Hayashi (So., Westlake Village, Calif./Thousand Oaks) posted a 159 (83, 76) to hold the 13th spot going into day two.  Connie Isler (Jr., Annapolis, Md./Meade) and Rosalina Ascolani (Fr., Coronado, Calif./Coronado) are currently 17th and 18th in the standings. Isler carded a 166 (79, 87), while Ascolani was one stroke back at 167 (84, 83).

The final round of play at the 2004 BIG EAST Championship will be played on Sunday, April 25 with the first golfers set to tee off at Notre Dame's Warren Golf Course at 8 a.m. (EST/CDT). Live tournament scoring will be available on the Golfstat web site (www.golfstat.com).
