No. 4 Duke Outlasts No. 9 Georgetown, 12-11 on Saturday

Durham, N.C. - The fourth-ranked Duke University women's lacrosse team won its 19th straight home game and the Blue Devils stopped No. 9 Georgetown, 12-11 on Saturday afternoon at Koskinen Stadium. The game saw five ties and three lead changes. Georgetown led 10-9 with 14 minutes to go but Duke (7-1) scored the game's next three goals over a four-minute span for a 12-10 advantage with 10 minutes remaining and held on down the stretch.

The Blue Devils were able to control the pace of the play in the second half, winning eight of the period's 12 draw controls, including the last five.

The Hoyas, who had their five-game winning streak snapped, received three goals from sophomore Molly Ford (Reisterstown, Md./Notre Dame Prep). Senior Zan Morley finished with two goals, both in the first half while classmate Patty Piotrowicz (Plymouth Meeting, Pa./Plymouth Whitemarsh) notched a goal and two assists to go along with three draws and two caused turnovers.

Junior Jordan Trautman (Mystic, Conn./Loomis Chaffee) compiled five ground balls, three draws and three caused turnovers.

Hoya leading scorer Ashby Kaestner (Trappe, Md./Saints Peter and Paul) finished with two goals and an assist.

Duke was led by Megan del Monte who posted three goals. Emma Hamm recorded two goals, two ground balls, three draws and four caused turnovers.

The game started under sunny skies but as a weather front hit the east coast, the seocnd half saw cooler temperatures and light rain.

The Hoyas held the lead just two times, 1-0 and 10-9 and Georgetown had to battle back from deficits of 4-1 in the first half and 7-5 in the second half.
 

 

Sophomore goalie Caitlin Formby (Towson, Md./Notre Dame Prep) made nine saves in the Blue and Gray cage.

Freshman Logan McCraw (Malvern, Pa./Conestoga) tallied her first career point, assisting on Georgetown's final goal scored by Jordy Kirr (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr) with 28 seconds left in regulation.

The Hoyas hit the field again on Wednesday, March 19 as William & Mary visits the Hilltop's Multi-Sport Field in a 3:30 p.m. contest.
