March 19, 2008 Washington, D.C. - The seventh-ranked Georgetown University women's lacrosse team held off a determined William & Mary team in a back and forth match to win 8-7 on a rainy afternoon at the MultiSport Field, in front of 304 fans. The Hoyas improve to 6-1 on the year, while William and Mary falls to 2-5 on the year. Sophomore Ashby Kaestner (Trappe, Md./Saints Peter and Paul) tallied her sixth straight multi-goal game and second consecutive five goal game of the season, notching the game winner for the Hoyas. Senior Zan Morley (Philadelphia, Pa./Springside School) and Freshman Mary Beth Brophy netted the two other Georgetown goals on the day. Freshman Jordy Kirr (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr School) recorded the only assist of the match for the Hoyas. Sophomore goalkeeper Caitlin Formby (Towson, Md./Notre Dame Prep) made a career-high 12 saves, including a final second diving stop after confusion in front of the Hoya net gave the Tribe one last opportunity to send the game into OT. Formby made a number of point blank saves on the day to help secure the Hoya victory. Kaestner opened the game's scoring with a free position goal at the 25:00 mark. Georgetown stretched the lead to two, after Morley scored an unassisted goal less than two minutes later. Kaestner would pick up her second on the day off a great feed from Kirr to extend the lead to 3-0 with 10 minutes left in the first half. Mary Beth Brophy would tally the Hoyas fourth goal of the day on a free-position attempt at the 7:56 mark in the first half.
The Hoyas held William & Mary scoreless for almost the entire half, but allowed two quick goals, less then 30 seconds apart to end the half. Grace Golden ended the Tribe's drought with 36 seconds left and teammate Jaime Sellers brought the score to 4-2, with eight seconds left in the half. William & Mary found their offense and defense at the end of the 1st half, tallying a quick second half goal on a free-position attempt by Clare Dennis and tied the score up at 4-4 on Golden's second of three goals on the day six minutes into the half. The Tribe held the Hoyas scoreless for 30 minutes spanning the end of the 1st half and start of the 2nd, until Kaestner notched her hat-trick at the 21:48 mark of the second to give the Hoyas the one goal lead. However, Sellers would tied the game again a little more than a minute later. Kaestner and Sellers would trade goals for both sides over the next 10 minutes, evening the game at 6-6. With less than six minutes left in regulation, Trautman picked up the ball behind the Tribe net and made a move past two defenders to score the seventh Hoya goal on the day. After winning an important draw control, Kaestner broke away from the Tribe defense and notched her fifth goal of the game to give the Hoyas a 8-6 lead with five minutes left in the game. Grace Golden led the Tribe attack with one final comeback attempt and scored with 43 seconds left on a free-position attempt, bringing the score to 8-7 in favor of the Hoyas. The Tribe won the ensuing draw and sprinted towards goal and received a free-position attempt. However, the Hoya defense quickly closed on Grace and forced her to turn the ball over. With time running down, Hoya goalkeeper Formby lost the ball in front of the net and made a diving save to seal the victory. Hopkins held a 10-6 draw control advantage, while the Hoyas converted on 3 of their 4 free-position attempts.
