No. 11 Notre Dame Tops No. 9 Georgetown 13-8 in Women's Lax Action

South Bend, Ind. - No. 11 Notre Dame (11-3, 3-1) topped the No. 9 Georgetown University women's lacrosse team 13-8 on Saturday afternoon at Moose Krause Stadium in league play. The Hoyas, who came into the game having never lost a BIG EAST regular-season game, a streak of 37 straight contests, fall to 7-6 on the year and 3-1 in league action.

Hoya freshman Ashby Kaestner (Trappe, Md./Saints Peter and Paul) notched her first career hat trick with all three goals coming in the first seven minutes of play. Kaestner also posted a team-best four caused turnovers. Junior Patty Piotrowicz (Plymouth Meeting, Pa./Plymouth Whitemarsh) matched a season-high with four ground balls while senior goalkeeper Maggie Koch (Philadelphia, Pa./Springside) stopped nine shots.

Notre Dame sophomore Jane Stoeckert scored the game's first goal from with Caitlin McKinney handing out an assist at 29:03 after the Irish won the initial draw.

Georgetown answered immediately as Kaestner scored unassisted at 25:53 dodging her defender from the left side of the cage.

Kaestner tallied again after Coco Stanwick (Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Prep) offered an assist at 24:45 after Megan Bloomer (Paoli, Pa./Conestoga) worked to corral a loose ball following a Schuyler Sutton (Annapolis, Md./Severn School) shot was blocked.

Keastner gave the Hoyas a 3-1 edge on a free position goal at 23:34 notching her first career hat trick.

Jill Byers netted a goal of her own after a McKinney assist at 16:20 to cap a long Irish possession.

Kaki Orr picked up a loose ball behind the goal after an errant shot and tied the game at 3-3 with 12:39 left in the first half.

 

 

Bunny O'Reilly (Blue Bell, Pa./Springside) gave the Hoyas a 4-3 advantage on a free position goal at 10:10.

Irish junior Mary Carpenter found the back of the net with Lena Zentgraff hanindg out a helper at 6:09 to tie the game at 4-4 after a GU turnover at midfield.

Notre Dame won the next two draw controls and converted both possessions into goals.

Stoeckert recorded a free position goal at 4:49 giving ND a 5-4 advantage.

Byers tallied her second goal of the game at 3:40 to give the Irish a 6-4 lead after taking a pretty pass from Zentgraf who was behind the net.

The Hoyas trailed at the half, 6-4 marking just the third time this season, GU was behind at the break. Notre Dame outshot Georgetown 11-6 in the opening period and ND held a 12-9 advantage in ground balls.

Billings scored despite falling down after McKinney dished out an assist from behind the goal as the Irish took their biggest lead 7-4 moments into the second half.

Stanwick netted her first goal of the game with an assist going to Bloomer at 27:11 as Georgetown closed to 7-5.

Byers picked a loose ball at 23:27 and whipped a shot past Koch to give the Irish an 8-5 lead

Georgetown continued the pressure with senior Brittany Baschuk (Chevy Chase, Md./Stone Ridge) scored unassisted at 16:48 as the Hoyas clawed to within 8-6. Baschuk came around the left side of the goal and slipped a shot through traffic.

Megan Murphy made it 9-6 in favor of the home team at 13:20 with McKinney offering her 20th assist of the season.

Notre Dame scored the next two goals in a five-plus minute span for an 11-6 lead.

Georgetown junior Zan Morley (Philadelphia, Pa./Springside) made it 11-7 scoring on a spin move with 7:10 to go.

McKinney scored her first goal of the game with just 3:36 to go upping the Irish bulge to 12-7 lead.

Hoya senior defender Laura Cipro (Elicott City, Md./Mount Hebron) scored her first goal of the game and second goal of her career with 25 seconds to go racing upfield after a Irish turnover.

The Hoyas came into the game with a 7-1 all-time record over the Irish but have now lost two straight.

Georgetown concluded a stretch of seven of eight road games today and returns to the Multi-Sport Field on Friday, April 20 when the Hoyas face cross-town rival Georgetown Washington at 3:45 p.m.
