WASHINGTON, DC - The No. 6 Georgetown University women's lacrosse team won its 12th game of the season with a 13-8 victory over James Madison University (7-9) on Wednesday, April 27, on North Kehoe Field. The Dukes close out the season with a 7-9 mark. Sophomore sensation Coco Stanwick led Georgetown in the victory with five goals and one assist, while Ali Chambers, Lauryn Bernier and Brittany Baschuk each chipped in two goals to the winning effort. Chambers also added an assist. Freshman midfielder Emily Haller led the Dukes on offense with three goals. Georgetown got off to a slow start and struggled throughout most of the first period. Kelly Berger put James Madison on the scoreboard first with an unassisted goal just 53 seconds into the contest, but senior midfielder Lauren Bernier answered with an unassisted tally 33 seconds later to tie the score at 1-1. JMU's Kelly Berger hit Julie Stone for the score at 26:30, followed by a goal from Haller 25 seconds later to put the Dukes up 3-1. The two teams then traded goals during a seven-minute stretch with Chambers and Stanwick posting goals for Georgetown and Haller connecting again for James Madison to make the score 4-3 in favor of JMU. The Dukes increased their lead to 6-3 with back-to-back goals at 13:33 and 10:33. The Hoyas finally got down to business, reeling off four-straight goals to close out the first half 7-6. Stanwick and sophomore attacker Brittany Baschuk each notched two goals during the run. All four goals were set up with assists. Senior attacker Sarah Oliphant, junior midfielders Paige Andrews and Lucy Poole, and Stanwick were credited with assists during the scoring bonanza, respectively. Georgetown took a 7-6 edge into the half.
Six minutes nearly passed in the second half before a goal was scored. Jessica Brownridge picked up a feed from Lynlea Cronin at 24:03 to knot the score for the third time of the day, but Oliphant set up senior attacker Hollis Pica for the score at 22:27. That goal would ignite a five-goal run by the Hoyas. Andrews scored off a free position at 17:46, followed by Stanwick's third goal of the afternoon at 14:55. Senior attacker Catherine Elbe earned the assist on Stanwick's goal. Chambers capitalized on a free position 48 seconds later, followed by a Stanwick goal at 11:06 to give the Hoyas a 12-7 lead. Finally, after 21 minutes without a goal, JMU's Berger found the back of the net at 2:26, but Bernier would close out the scoring for the day with an unassisted goal with 1:13 on the clock to seal a 13-8 GU victory. Georgetown Head Coach Ricky Fired continued to utilize two goalies for the fourth-straight game. Senior Sarah Robinson started the contest and made five saves while allowing six goals in 30 minutes of play. Sophomore Maggie Koch got the nod for the second half. Koch rejected seven JMU shots while allowing just two goals. Amy Altig and Livvy King split time in goal for the Dukes with Altig making six saves and allowing 12 goals in 57 minutes, and King notching one save while allowing one goal. The Hoyas outshot the Dukes 31-24 and held a slight 27-23 advantage in ground balls. GU also had four more caused turnovers (12-8); however, James Madison won 13 draw controls to Georgetown's 10. Georgetown will close out the regular season with a game against Johns Hopkins on Saturday, May 7, at 1:00 p.m. on North Kehoe Field.
