South Bend, Ind. - A six-goal run over a 17 minute span in the second half helped erase a 4-3 Hoya lead and lift the fifth-ranked Syracuse Orange to a 12-6 win over seventh-ranked Georgetown in the 2008 BIG EAST Tournament Championship Game on Sunday afternoon. Syracuse (16-2) has won three straight over the Hoyas and earns the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. The Hoyas (11-6) will host No. 6 Princeton in the final regular season contest on Saturday, May 3 on the Multi-Sport Field. The first draw control is set for 1 p.m. Georgetown was able to get 16 of their 28 total shots on goal in the title game. "I thought we had a good scheme defensively and we carried it out at least in the first half," said GU head coach Ricky Fried. "But we didn't finish enough of our offensive opportunities in the first half. I think we were a bit content to just possess the ball. "In the second half, we committed too many turnovers (9) and we didn't shoot it particularly well," Fried added. "Give Syracuse credit. They can score in bunches and they did it again today." Molly Ford (Reisterstown, Md.) finished with two goals and two assists for the Hoyas on Sunday. Senior Patty Piotrowicz (Plymouth Meeting, Pa.) finished with a goal and two draws. Amelia Wesselink (Exeter, N.H.) and Bridget Noon (Annapolis, Md.) totaled two draws and a ground ball each. Sophomore goalie Caitlin Formby (Towson, Md.) notched 10 saves for her seventh double-figure save outing of the season.
Kaestner tallied the second half's opening goal with Ford handing out an assist to give the Hoyas a 4-2 lead. Georgetown took a 3-2 halftime lead. The Blue and Gray controlled the pace of the play holding the ball offensively through the game's first 15 minutes. GU outshot the Orange, 11-4 in the early going. The two goals scored by Syracuse tied the BIG EAST Tournament record for the fewest in a half and it marked just third time that the Orange trailed at intermission this season. Ford assisted on freshman Allie's Hubschmann (Short Hills, N.J.) goal in the transition game following a nice Formby save at 26:21 for a 1-0 Hoya lead. Ford then took a pass from Megan Bloomer (Paoli, Pa.) and tickled the twine at 19:30 for a 2-0 Hoya edge. Bloomer took a free position attempt and passed the ball to Ford who was standing on the doorstep. Zan Morley (Philadelphia, Pa.) then passed to Ford immediately following a Katie Burton (Catonsville, Md.) caused turnover with 18 minutes remaining for a 3-0 Georgetown lead. Syracuse got on the board with 12 minutes to go in the half when Kristin Brady notched her 35th goal of the season. Ten minutes later, Christina Dove scored unassisted with 2:48 left in the first half to pull the Orange to 3-2 shortly before the teams headed to the locker rooms. Georgetown sophomore Ashby Kaestner (Trappe, Md.) tallied the second half's opening goal with Ford handing out an assist to give the Hoyas a 4-2 lead. Awehiyo Thomas answered for Syracuse with a free position goal moments later to start the Syracuse six goal stretch over the 16 minute span. Katie Rowan tied the game at 4-4 with 26:20 to go in regulation and Christina Dove earned an assist. Rowan scored a free position goal to give the Orange its first lead of the game, 5-4 with 19 minutes remaining. Thomas scored to make it 6-4 after Dove scooped up a rebound of a blocked shot at the 14:53 mark. Four more SU goals gave the top seed in the tournament a 10-4 lead with 4:40 remaining.
