WASHINGTON, D.C. (April 1) -- Sophomore All-American attacker Erin Elbe (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) scored five goals and three assists to lead the sixth-ranked Georgetown University Hoyas to a 16-6 victory over the Scarlet Knights of Rutgers University in women's lacrosse action on Saturday, April 1, at Kehoe Field. In addition to Elbe's game-high five goals, junior All American midfielder Sheehan Stanwick (Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Prep) and sophomore attacker Kate Ahearn (Baltimore, Md./St. Paul's) added a hat trick and an assist apiece to the Hoyas' winning efforts. Sophomore midfielder Susan Duccilli led Rutgers in scoring with two goals on the day. Georgetown improves to 6-2 with the win, while Rutgers drops to 3-5.
The Hoyas wasted no time in getting on the scoreboard. Stanwick fired a shot into the nets just 43 seconds into the game. That began a five-goal run by Georgetown with goals from sophomore attacker Kate Ahearn (Baltimore, Md./St. Paul's), senior midfielder Kristen Baer (Norristown, Pa./Plymouth Whitemarsh) and Elbe. Elbe scored back-to-back goals at 24:57 and 22:37, respectively, to put the Hoyas up 5-0 before Duccilli ended the Rutgers' drought at 18:41 off a free position shot. Georgetown responded by reeling off three-straight goals. Stanwick capitalized off a free position shot from eight-meters out at the 17:30 mark to make the score 6-1. Elbe then set up junior midfielder Reagan Raneri (Baltimore, Md./Roland Park) for a goal at 15:05 to push the Hoya lead to six (7-1). Junior midfielder Sarah Oglesby (Baltimore, Md./St. Paul's) then made it 8-1 with 12:55 to play in the first period. Jill Penrose stepped up with the Scarlet Knights second goal of the game with 8:08 left on the clock, but it would be the last score of the period for Rutgers. Senior attacker Jori Keating (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) closed out the first stanza with a goal at the 1:20 mark to give Georgetown a 9-2 advantage at the half. Elbe was credited with the assist. Georgetown did not let up in the second half. The Hoyas tallied three-consecutive goals, starting with Ahearn's second of the day at 28:12 off an assist from Stanwick to give GU a 10-2 lead. Keating took a feed from Elbe to make it 11-2 at the 25:37 mark. Elbe notched back-to-back goals to increase the Hoyas' lead to 13-2 with 23:06 remaining in the game, but the Scarlet Knights went on a scoring run of their own, tallying three-straight goals. Duccilli recorded her second goal of the day at 20:41 off an assist from Penrose. RU's Elizabeth Chambers set up Andrea Boeheim for the score at 14:31; and a minute later, Nadia Rogala stepped up with Rutgers' fifth goal to pull the Scarlet Knights to within eight (13-5). Ahearn's third goal came at the 7:55 mark off a free position shot at the eight-meter mark. Megan Bolster scored Rutgers' last goal of the game with 5:21 to go, but it was Stanwick who closed out the scoring for the day with an unassisted goal with only 1:35 left on the clock to give Georgetown a 16-6 victory. Once again, junior Bowen Holden (Lincoln, Mass./Lincoln-Sudbury) and sophomore Chandler Vicchio (Baltimore, Md./Mount de Sales Academy) split time in the goalkeeper cage for the Hoyas. Holden rejected 10 Scarlet Knights' shots, while allowing six goals. Chandler posted two saves in the contest. Rutgers' goalie, Layren Gulotta, had a busy day in goal. She posted 17 saves and allowed all 16 goals. The Hoyas outshot the Tigers 39-20, while both teams ended the game with seven free position shots. Georgetown held a 16-7 advantage in draws. Georgetown's next two contests are at home on Kehoe Field. The Hoyas take on the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame on Wednesday, April 5, at 3:30 p.m. Then, on Saturday, April 8, the Hoyas host the fifth-ranked Tar Heels of North Carolina at Noon.
