Women's Lacrosse Loses To #1 Maryland, 16-6

COLLEGE PARK, MD. (April 14) -- The #1-ranked Maryland Terrapins, led by senior Kristin Sommar's six points on two goals and four assists, outlasted the #5 Georgetown Hoyas by a score of 16-6 in women's lacrosse action on Thursday, April 13, at Ludwig Field on the University of Maryland campus. Junior All-American midfielder Sheehan Stanwick (Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Prep) was the Hoyas' top scorer with five goals on the day. Maryland raises its record to 11-1 on the season, while the Hoyas move to 8-3.

The level of play was intense and indicative of a top-five match-up. With 17:27 remaining in the game, the Terps held only a one-goal advantage (7-6); however, Maryland's offense came alive with the Terrapins firing off nine unanswered goals to seal a 10-goal victory.

The Terps' Jen Adams got things started with a goal at the 26:31 mark, with Quinn Carney picking up the assist on the play. Maryland then scored three times within a minute-and-a-half period with Sonia Judd notching two goals, and Quinn Carney sandwiching a goal in between, to give the Terps a 4-0 lead with 19:51 on the clock. Georgetown got on the scoreboard 18 seconds later when Stanwick found the back of the net. It would be her first of three goals within a 10-minute span. Freshman midfielder Elizabeth Ryan (Baltimore, Md./Roland Park) was credited with the assist on Stanwick's third goal. With another goal from senior midfielder Kristen Baer (Norristown, Pa./Plymouth Whitemarsh) before the half, and Terrapin goals from Adams, Carney, and senior attack Christie Jenkins, the halftime score was separated by only three goals (7-4).

The second half opened with two back-to-back goals by Stanwick to close the UM lead to 7-6. Unfortunately, it would be the Hoyas' last score of the game. Maryland then went on a nine-goal run after enduring a 19:24 scoring drought, the longest of the year for the Terps.

Junior goalkeeper Bowen Holden (Lincoln, Mass./Lincoln-Sudbury) tied a season-high with 18 saves on the day, while allowing 16 goals. Terp senior netminder Alex Kahoe also posted a season-high 18 saves, while allowing six goals. Maryland outshot Georgetown 34-28 and held an 11-8 advantage in draw controls. The Terrapins also held an 8-7 edge in free position shots.

Georgetown will enjoy an eight-day break in the schedule before traveling to Harrisonburg, Va., on Saturday, April 22, for a 12:00 noon contest against the #3-ranked Dukes of James Madison.
