Georgetown Defeats George Mason, 19-15, In Final Regular Season Contest

WASHINGTON D.C. (May 3) - Sophomore All-American attacker Erin Elbe (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) scored four goals and tallied three assists to lead Georgetown's 8th-ranked women's lacrosse team to a 19-15 victory over #18 George Mason on May 3, on Kehoe Field. The win marked the final regular season game for GU and capped an undefeated 7-0 home stance. The Hoyas' record moves to 11-4, while the Patriots fall to 7-9.

Junior All-American attacker Sheehan Stanwick (Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Prep) scored the first goal of the game at 28:52 off an assist from Elbe. Senior midfielder Kristen Baer (Norristown, Pa./Plymouth Whitemarsh) added another GU score at 25:50 for a 2-0 lead. George Mason tied the game with goals from Jill Toomey (24:40), who had help from Kinsley O'Garrow, and Cara McFadden's (23:04) free position shot. The Hoyas followed with a 9-0 scoring burst, seven of which were unassisted, to go ahead 11-2. Midfielder Reagan Raneri (Jr., Baltimore, Md./Roland Park) posted two netters (22:01, 16:19) as did attacker Wick Stanwick (Fr., Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Prep) (14:54, 14:18), and Elbe (21:16, 11:03). Baer notched her second goal at the 9:53 mark, then Elbe assisted senior attacker Jordan Keating's (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) score at 8:17. Elbe picked up her third goal (7:48) on the fly off the assist from Baer. But, by the end of the half, the Patriots had pulled to within four with five straight goals of their own. Cathy Gross (7:12) and Candice Cummings (6:50) each tallied unassisted scores. And with less than two minutes left in the first half, GMU registered three more goals. McFadden found the back of the net for her second goal at 1:38. Then, Cummings picked up a free position score with 0:35.7 left on the clock for her second goal, and assisted Liz Paoli at the 0:06.9 mark to make the score 11-7 at halftime.

In the second half, Sheehan Stanwick and Erin Elbe opened the period the same way they did in the first as Elbe assisted Stanwick with a goal at 27:46. At the 24:45 mark, junior midfielder Sarah Oglesby (Baltimore, Md./St. Paul's) posted a score with help from Wick Stanwick. GMU scored twice to trim the Hoya margin to 13-9. GU pushed the lead to eight again with four consecutive goals from Wick Stanwick (20:06, assisted by freshman defender Melissa Biles [Alexandria, Va./St. Stephen's and St. Agnes]), Raneri (14:00, assisted by Baer), Sheehan Stanwick (12:56, unassisted), and Oglesby (11:32, unassisted). George Mason picked up two free position scores at 9:57 and 8:29. Elbe responded with a free position goal of her own, and her fourth of the game, at the 6:01 mark. The Patriots' Toomey recorded her second goal of the afternoon off an assist from Paoli with 4:55 left in the frame. The Hoyas added an insurance goal when freshman midfielder Elizabeth Ryan (Baltimore, Md./Roland Park) tallied an unassisted score at 4:10. George Mason never gave up, however, finishing the second half the same way they did the first half by scoring three straight goals with less than two minutes remaining. GU won the final draw and kept GMU from scoring again as time ran out on the Patriots and the game ended with a 19-15 Hoya victory. Junior goalkeeper Bowen Holden (Lincoln, Mass./Lincoln-Sudbury) collected 14 saves while allowing 13 goals. Backup goalie Chandler Vicchio (So., Baltimore, Md./Mount de Sales Academy) also saw action stopping one shot while allowing two goals. George Mason's Jamie Tiburzi turned away 11 shots but allowed 19 goals. Georgetown outshot the Patriots 36-22 and held a 33-25 groundball advantage.

The eighth-ranked Hoyas now await a bid to the 2000 NCAA Women's Lacrosse Tournament, which will be announced on May 7.
