WASHINGTON, D.C. (May 11) - Georgetown junior All-American attacker Sheehan Stanwick (Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Prep) stepped up in big way with four second half goals, five total for the game, to lead the 8th-ranked Hoyas to an 11-10 win May 11 over the 9th-ranked Syracuse Orangewomen in the first round of the 2000 NCAA Women's Lacrosse Tournament played on Georgetown's Kehoe Field. GU improves to 12-4 while Syracuse closes out its season at 12-4. With the score tied at 5-5 at the end of the first period, Stanwick came out on fire, scoring Georgetown's first two goals of the second half at 25:12 and 23:06. Lauren Brady responded for SU at 22:13 to trim the lead to 7-6. However, Stanwick came up big once again with back-to-back goals at 17:11 and 13:37 to move the GU advantage to 9-6. Syracuse's Kim Wayne posted her second goal of the afternoon for a 9-7 Hoya lead. Senior Georgetown attacker Jordan Keating (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) added a goal at 8:46, but the Orangewomen tallied a netter almost a minute later as Carrie Soults found the back of the net with 7:45 left on the clock. Georgetown's senior captain Kristen Baer (Norristown, Pa./Plymouth Whitemarsh) registered an insurance goal for the Hoyas at 4:42. Syracuse attempted a rally in the final minutes of the game scoring at 3:04 and 2:09 to pull to within one at 11-10. GU won the draw and managed to run out the clock despite SU's pressure defense at the end of the contest. Sophomore attacker Erin Elbe (Garden City, N.J./Garden City) tallied two goals for Georgetown, including GU's score with :03.1 seconds remaining in the first half to tie the game at five. Attacker Lauren Brady led the Orangewomens in scoring with three goals and one assist. Junior All-American attacker Bowen Holden (Lincoln, Mass./Lincoln-Sudbury) notched 15 saves in the net for the Hoyas and allowed 10 goals. Freshman goalkeeper Carla Gignon recorded 13 saves for SU and allowed 11 goals. Georgetown advances to the NCAA Tournament quarterfinal round and will face No. 1 seed Maryland on Sunday, May 14, at 1:00 p.m. at Maryland's Ludwig Field. GU last met the Terps on April 13, with UM handing the Hoyas a 16-6 defeat.
