Georgetown's Stanwick Named As A Finalist For Tewaaraton Trophy

May 16, 2001

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Georgetown University senior Sheehan Stanwick (Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Academy) has been named as one of five finalists for the inaugural Tewaaraton Trophy. The Tewaaraton Trophy is the most cherished and prestigious award a lacrosse player can receive. Nineteen of the best female lacrosse players in the country were nominated for this coveted award, including GU senior goalkeeper Bowen Holden, senior midfielder Caitlin McLean, and junior attacker Erin Elbe. The 19 nominees were narrowed to five finalists as announced today by a six-member selection committee. Joining Stanwick are Maryland attacker Jen Adams and midfielder Quinn Carney, Duke midfielder Kate Kaiser and Princeton midfielder Julie Shaner. The winner will be announced in a ceremony at the University Club in Washington, D.C. on June 6, at the University Club.

Stanwick has enjoyed a sensational senior season, becoming the most prolific scorer in the 25-year history of Georgetown women's lacrosse. A three-time national All-American, she is the first player in GU history to reach 300 points, score 200 goals and tally over 100 points in a season. Stanwick's current career totals include 227 goals and 94 assists for 321 points. She has posted 70 goals and 36 assists for 106 points for the 2001 season, a new Georgetown benchmark for most points in a single season. In the latest NCAA Division I Statistical Leaders List released on May 6, she is ranked fourth in the nation in points per game (5.81) and goals (3.81). Stanwick, a tri-captain for the 2001 squad, is also fifth on the assists leaders list with a 2.00 average. She is the 2001 BIG EAST Attack Player of the Year and a member of the All-BIG EAST First Team. Stanwick was recently named to the 2001 Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches' Association (IWLCA) South Region All-America First Team, for the fourth consecutive time.

The Tewaaraton Trophy selection committee consists of six of the most respected coaches in women's lacrosse, including GU Head Coach Kim Simons as chairman. Simons comments, "Our 19 candidates for the inaugural Tewaaraton Trophy had great seasons, but these five players really established themselves as the elite players in the country. We look forward to presenting one of these players with the first annual Tewaaraton Trophy."

Georgetown, under Simons' direction and Stanwick's leadership, is having the best season in the women's lacrosse program's 25-year history. The Hoyas have compiled a record of 16-2 overall, a new school record for most wins in a season, and have advanced to the NCAA Division I Women's Lacrosse Final Four for the first time in school history. GU defeated 14th-seeded Hofstra 20-5 in the first round of the tournament on May 10. Georgetown, the 2001 BIG EAST Champions, then handed 6th-seeded North Carolina a 10-4 loss in the quarterfinals on May 13.
