May 23, 2001 DURHAM, N.C. -- Four Georgetown University women's lacrosse players have been selected to the 2001 Brine/Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches' Association (IWLCA) All-America First Team, as announced by Kerstin Kimel, Chair of All-America Committee and head coach of women's lacrosse at Duke University. Senior Sheehan Stanwick (Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Academy) and junior Erin Elbe (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) were selected to the First Team attack, while Caitlin McLean (Jenkintown, Pa./Jenkintown) was tapped for First Team Defense and Bowen Holden (Lincoln, Mass./Lincoln-Sudbury) as one of the First Team's goalies. Georgetown tied with Maryland for the most players chosen to the First Team with four players apiece. Sheehan Stanwick has enjoyed a sensational senior season, becoming the most prolific scorer in the 25-year history of Georgetown women's lacrosse. She is the first player in GU history to reach 300 points, score 200 goals and tally over 100 points in a season. Stanwick's career totals include 232 goals and 98 assists for 330 points. For the 2001 season, she posted 75 goals and 40 assists for 115 points, a new Georgetown benchmark for most points in a single season. In the latest NCAA Division I Statistical Leaders List released on May 6, she is ranked fourth in the nation in points per game (5.81) and goals (3.81). Stanwick, a tri-captain for the 2001 squad, is also fifth on the assists leaders list with a 2.00 average. She is the 2001 BIG EAST Attack Player of the Year and is a finalist for the first-ever Tewaaraton Trophy. The Tewaaraton Trophy, the most cherished and prestigious trophy a collegiate lacrosse player can receive, is presented annually to the top female and male collegiate lacrosse players in the United States. It is the fourth-straight year that Stanwick has been recognized with Regional All-America honors. Elbe was terrific at the attack position this year. A nominee for the inaugural Tewaaraton Trophy, she was second on the team in scoring with 60 goals and 26 assists for 86 points. The 86 points put her in second place in the GU record books for most points in a single season. Elbe was also second on the team in draw controls with 33. She is 11th in the country in points per game with 4.38, according to the latest NCAA Statistical Leaders List, and ninth in assists per game (1.56). Career totals include 153 goals and 57 assists for 210 points. The 210 points rank Elbe second on GU all-time career points list. Her 153 career goals move her into second place in the Hoya record books in that category, while her 57 assists place her third on the all-time assist list. Elbe is also a candidate for the Tewaaraton Trophy. It is her third-consecutive Regional All-America award. McLean, a consistent presence in Georgetown's nationally ranked defense the past four years, earns her second-consecutive Regional All-America award. McLean's responsibility as the Hoyas' match-up defender at the midfield position is to shut down many of the nation's top attackers, a job she has excelled at. Her solid performances have been rewarded with All-America accolades as well as a nomination for the prestigious Tewaaraton Trophy. This season, McLean tied for second on the squad in ground balls (56) and caused turnovers (36). She also won 13 draws and posted five goals and one assist for six points. McLean amassed 214 ground balls, 108 caused turnovers and 59 draw controls in her four years as a Hoya, as well as 11 goals and three assists for 14 points. The 214 ground balls rank her second on the GU all-time list, while her 59 draws move her into seventh place on that list. A four-year starter on GU's field hockey team, McLean was a tri-captain of the 2001 nationally ranked squad. She scored four goals and two assists for 10 points and made four defensive saves this past season. Holden had an outstanding 2001 season, despite playing with a serious ACL injury since the fourth game of the season. Missing only two contests, she posted 146 saves this year while allowing just 114 goals for a .562 save percentage and a 7.10 goals against average. Holden's career totals are equally impressive with 747 saves and 515 goals against over 66 games. Her 747 saves are good for second place on the Georgetown all-time list for career saves, while her 114 goals allowed rank her fourth in the fewest goals allowed in a single season category. Holden holds down the fourth spot on the May 6th NCAA leaders list in goals against average (6.76). She is 11th in save percentage (.579). Holden, a tri-captain, is a finalist for the Honda Award for women's lacrosse. She also earned a spot on the 2001 All-BIG EAST First Team and was a nominee for the Tewaaraton Trophy. The Regional All-America accolades were the fourth of Holden's career. Georgetown had its best year ever in the 25-year history of the program under sixth year Head Coach Kim Simons. The team made its fourth-consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament and advanced for the first time ever to the semifinal and championship game. In addition, the Hoyas were the 2001 BIG EAST Champion and finished the year with a 17-3 overall record and a perfect 6-0 in BIG EAST play. The 17 victories set a new school mark for most wins in a season.
