Stanwick, Holden and McLean Earn IWLCA Player of the Year Honors

June 12, 2001

Towson, MD - Georgetown University women's lacrosse players Sheehan Stanwick (Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Academy), Bowen Holden (Lincoln, Mass./Lincoln-Sudbury) and Caitlin McLean (Jenkintown, Pa./Jenkintown) were named Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) Division I Players of the Year at the IWLCA All-American Banquet held Saturday, July 9, in Towson, Md. Stanwick was selected Attacker of the Year, Holden earned Goalie of the Year and McLean picked up Defender of the Year. Maryland's Jen Adams garnered Midfielder of the Year to round out the Division I award winners.

Stanwick enjoyed a sensational senior season, becoming the most prolific scorer in the 25-year history of the Georgetown women's lacrosse program. She is the first player in GU history to reach 300 points, score 200 goals and tally over 100 points in a season. Stanwick's career totals include 232 goals and 98 assists for 330 points. For the 2001 season, she tallied 75 goals and 40 assists for 115 points to establish a new Georgetown benchmark for most points in a single season. In the last NCAA Division I Statistical Leaders List released on May 6, Stanwick was ranked fourth in the nation in points per game (5.81) and goals (3.81). A tri-captain for the 2001 squad, she was also fifth on the assists leaders list with a 2.00 average. Stanwick was selected to the IWLCA All-America First Team for the second straight year and earned Regional All-America honors for the fourth consecutive time in 2001. In addition, she was named the 2001 BIG EAST Attack Player of the Year and was a finalist for the first-ever Tewaaraton Trophy as well as the Honda Award for Women's Lacrosse. The Tewaaraton Trophy is presented annually to the top female and male collegiate lacrosse players in the United States.

Holden had an outstanding 2001 season, despite playing with a serious ACL injury since the fourth game of the season. Missing only two contests, she posted 146 saves while allowing just 114 goals for a .562 save percentage and 7.10 goals against average. Holden's career totals are equally impressive with 747 saves and 515 goals against over 66 games. Her 747 saves are good for second place on the Georgetown all-time list for career saves, while her 114 goals allowed rank her fourth in the fewest goals allowed in a single season category. Holden ended the year ranked fourth on the May 6th NCAA Division I leaders list in goals against average (6.76). She was 11th in save percentage (.579). Holden, a tri-captain, garnered All-America First Team accolades this season and earned Regional All-America honors for the fourth time in her career. In addition, she was a finalist for the Honda Award for Women's Lacrosse, earned a spot on the 2001 All-BIG EAST First Team and was a nominee for the Tewaaraton Trophy.

McLean was a consistent presence in Georgetown's nationally ranked defense the last four years. McLean's responsibility as the Hoyas' match-up defender at the midfield position is to shut down many of the nation's top attackers, a job she has excelled at. Her solid performances were rewarded with All-America National and Regional First Team accolades for the second-straight year as well as a nomination for the prestigious Tewaaraton Trophy. McLean tied for second on the 2001 squad in ground balls (56) and caused turnovers (36). She also won 13 draws and posted five goals and one assist for six points. McLean amassed 214 ground balls, 108 caused turnovers and 59 draw controls in her four years as a Hoya, as well as 11 goals and three assists for 14 points. The 214 ground balls rank her second on the GU all-time list, while her 59 draws move her into seventh place on that list. A four-year starter on GU's field hockey team, McLean was a tri-captain of the 2001 nationally ranked squad. She scored four goals and two assists for 10 points and made four defensive saves this past season.
