Mike Calabretta, entering his fourth season on the Georgetown
staff, brings a wide range of coaching experience to the Hoyas'
program. His primary duties include recruiting coordination, player
development, and assisting Head Coach Dave Nolan in all aspects of
team preparation.
In his time at Georgetown, the Hoyas have enjoyed the most
successful period in program history. The team has set records for
most regular season wins (14), most BIG EAST wins (6), highest BIG
EAST Conference finish (3rd), and a program-best NSCAA/adidas #4
Regional Ranking.
The Hoyas have also made the BIG EAST Tournament in two of the past
three seasons and advanced to the BIG EAST Championship semifinals
for the first time after defeating the #23 UConn Huskies (11/4/07).
Most notably, the team earned its first NCAA Tournament appearance
and best overall finish in 2007.
Calabretta, who holds a United States Soccer Federation (USSF) National "B" License and a Premier Diploma from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA), has also been involved at the club level since 2000.
Working in both the Bethesda Soccer Club and Reston Football Club,
Calabretta established himself early on as one of the area's
prominent young coaches. In his first two years he collected a
record of 81-17-10 highlighted by a European Championship in the
world's third largest youth tournament.
In 2003, Calabretta helped start the girls program at Reston
Football Club, which rapidly emerged as one of the best in the
nation. By 2005, RFC was ranked as the #1 club in Virginia and #4
in Region I. Since its inception, the club has sent more than 150
players to some of the top NCAA Division I men's and women's soccer
programs in the United States.
During that time, Calabretta led his RFC Rovers and RFC United teams to state cup and tournament championship titles and top twenty-five national rankings. His teams have enjoyed outstanding records of success and have been consistently ranked among the best in the country.
A member of the Region I Girls Olympic Development Program (ODP)
staff, Calabretta has also been involved with the Maryland Olympic
Development Program on the boys side serving as a staff coach from
1999-2000. At both the ODP and club levels, he has helped to
develop players for the U.S. Youth National and Regional teams.
In 2001, Calabretta took over as the Director of Player Development
for the Maryland SoccerPlex in Germantown, MD, a position he held
for two and a half years while also working as the Director of
Sales and Sponsorships for the Maryland Soccer Foundation. He
served as a member of the operations committee for the 2002 and
2003 U.S. Youth Soccer National Championships.
In addition to his college and club coaching experience, Calabretta
coached at the Georgetown Preparatory School in 2004.
Calabretta holds a bachelor's degree in Engineering Management from
the University of Maryland and is completing his master's degree in
Sports Industry Management from Georgetown University.
