Georgetown Women's Soccer Continues Impressive Start, Defeats Mississippi State, 3-0

Sept. 5, 2008

Box Score

Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown women's soccer team received two goals and an assist from junior Toni Marie Hudson (Coral Springs, Fla./Stoneman Douglas) in a 3-0 win over Mississippi State on Friday afternoon. The win at the George Mason Tournament marked the first victory over a SEC opponent in program history and moved the Hoyas' record to 4-0-0, another program first.

"I thought we did a fine job today against a team that weren't too sure of," Head Coach Dave Nolan said. "They play a little different from the teams we've seen so far and they're a good, physical team, not chippy, and we rose to meet that challenge."

After hitting the post and being denied on a close shot in the first 10 minutes of the contest, Hudson broke into the scoring column in the 16th minute. After a failed defensive clearance hit midfielder Kelly D'Ambrisi (Trumbull, Conn./Lauralton Hall Academy) in the chest, the freshman alertly played it down and found a streaking Hudson for a 1v1 opportunity. Hudson capitalized for an early 1-0 lead.

In the second half, a corner-kick from Durkee was fired into the penalty area, and Hudson worked it free from a defender. Sophomore Michaela Buonomo pounced on the loose ball and smashed home the Hoyas' second goal. Eight minutes later, a long ball was played over the top to Durkee who fed it along to Hudson, and the forward closed out her five-point day with her second goal and a 3-0 GU advantage.

"What happened today that maybe didn't happen against Ohio and American, was that we capitalized on chances," Nolan said. "Yes we had a lot of shots-on-goal, but as far as real chances, we either made them work or scored goals on them."

The Hoyas had a handful of chances in the first half, including a free-kick from sophomore Caitlin Durkee (St. Paul, Minn./Como Park) and a shot from senior Nicole Smith (Washingtonville, N.Y./Washingtonville) that both had to be saved by MSU goalkeeper Taryn Holland. Hudson, D'Ambrisi and freshman Samantha Baker (Long Beach, Calif./Wilson) also had good opportunities that sailed either just high or wide.

In the second half, Baker was denied point-blank and Hudson was called offside, nullifying a goal that would have made it 2-0 in favor of the Blue & Gray. At that point, Mississippi State started to challenge the Hoya defense, but the back-line weathered the attacks until the offense could break through on their end.

"I thought our girls played extremely well today and we needed that because we had a lot of people play," Nolan said. "Stephanie (Zare) didn't show in the stat column today but she was tremendous for us all over the pitch and girls like Camille (Trujillo) and Amy (Speck) come off the bench and perform."

Georgetown dominated both halves, out-shooting the Bulldogs 12-4 in each stanza. GU also racked up 12 corner-kick opportunities, as compared to two for MSU. Sophomore Jackie DesJardin (Sunnyvale, Calif./Archbishop Mitty) notched her first shutout of 2008 by making three saves.

The Hoyas will play Hartford on Sunday at 1 p.m. in the fourth and final game of the George Mason Tournament.
