Sept. 7, 2008
Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown women's soccer team kept their undefeated start to the 2008 season alive, but was held to a 0-0 draw this afternoon against Hartford. Four Hoyas were named to the George Mason All-Tournament team; Toni Marie Hudson (Coral Springs, Fla./Stoneman Douglas), Stephanie Zare (Lake Bluff, Ill./Lake Forest), Michaela Buonomo (Churchville, Pa/Council Rock) and Caitlin Durkee (St. Paul, Minn./Como Park). The Hoyas were able to create more opportunities and scoring chances than Hartford, but unlike Friday's game, the team had a tough time getting that one breakthrough. For the contest, GU out-shot Hartford, 14-5, and had twice as many corner-kicks, 6-3. In the end, both teams ran out of energy underneath the mid-day sun during the second overtime session and the game ended as a draw. One minute into the game, a Durkee corner found the head of Buonomo for the game's first real chance. The defender's header was blocked, but the ball found freshman Kelly D'Ambrisi (Trumbull, Conn./Lauralton Hall Academy). The midfielder composed herself for a shot-on-goal but was denied by Hartford goalkeeper Lauren Brodeur. In the 11th minute, Samantha Baker (Long Beach, Calif./Wilson) had a try, but sent her shot wide of the goal. Later, Durkee had two good chances midway through the half when she sailed one over Brodeur, and then had a header denied by the UH goalkeeper In the opening minutes of the second half, Georgetown again had a header trickle wide, this time from Zare. GU penned the Hawks in on their side of the field and collected four consecutive corner-kick opportunities, although none resulted in goals.
After a Durkee shot went high and Hartford cleared to slow the initial Hoya attack, Baker and classmate Camille Trujillo (Albuquerque, N.M./St. Pius X) were denied less than two minutes apart. Hudson's best chance came in the 83rd minute, but like her teammates, could not sneak the ball past Brodeur. Defender Norah Swanson (Alamo, Calif./San Ramon Valley) had the last Hoya gasp at a goal in regulation, when she was stopped with seven seconds remaining. In overtime, D'Ambrisi, Baker and Hudson all had chances to end the contest in style, but on this day, a goal for the Blue & Gray was not to be. Jackie DesJardin (Sunnyvale, Calif./Archbishop Mitty) recorded her second-consecutive shutout and the Hoya defense ran their current scoreless streak to over 200 minutes, spanning the last three games. This was the first Hoya tie since October 13, 2006 and it also kept the team's all-time unbeaten streak against the America East conference intact (5-0-2). The Hoyas return to action this Friday, September 12 at 3 p.m. when they host Towson on North Kehoe Field. |
