Georgetown Women's Soccer Continues Strong Play, Beats Stony Brook, 2-0

Sept. 9, 2007

Box Score

Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown University women's soccer team defeated the Stony Brook Seawolves, 2-0, in their second game at the George Mason Tournament on Sunday afternoon. Senior Sarah Fetters (Coral Springs, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas) and junior Stephanie Zare (Lake Bluff, Ill./Lake Forest) scored less than two minutes apart in the second half for the game's only goals.

The Hoyas again dominated play in the first half, out-shooting Stony Brook, 13-1. However, Georgetown could not beat Seawolf goalkeeper Marisa Viola, who made five saves in the first 45 minutes.

In the second stanza, Georgetown finally got in the scoring column. Zare set up the first goal in the 59th minute when she played the ball through the box to Fetters, who then settled and scored her second goal of the season. Then in the 60th minute, senior Vanessa Joyce (Santa Clara, Calif./Archbishop Mitty) crossed a ball from the left that Zare headed home for the quick second tally.

Georgetown freshman goalkeeper Jackie DesJardin (Sunnyvale, Calif./Archbishop Mitty) made three saves in the second half to earn her third shutout of the season.

The Hoyas next game will be their home-opener on Wednesday, September 12 when they host American University at 3 p.m.
