Georgetown Women's Soccer Drops Tough Conference Game on the Road, 2-1, at Rutgers

Sept. 30, 2007

Box Score

Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown University women's soccer team dropped a tough road contest on Sunday afternoon, falling 2-1 at Rutgers. A first-half goal by junior midfielder Stephanie Zare (Lake Bluff, Ill./Lake Forest) did not hold up as the Scarlet Knights tied it before the half, and won it in the final 45 minutes. The Hoyas are now 7-3-0, 1-2-0 in the BIG EAST.

After a Karen Waskewich (Laytonsville, Md./Academy of the Holy Cross) corner-kick, Zare was on the right side of the penalty area, where she let go off a shot that found its way into the net for a Hoya lead in the 22nd minute.

Kristie Lang scored her third goal of the season in the 68th minute to give the Scarlet Knights the win. On the game-winner, Gina DeMaio got away from her defender and kicked the ball into the box, where Lang was able to gather it and score.

DeMaio also scored on a free kick in the first half, tying the game at one with her fourth goal of the season. That goal came after a Georgetown foul in the 29th minute.

For the game, Rutgers out-shot the Hoyas 6-3 in each half. However, GU held the advantage on corner-kicks, 8-5, including a 7-0 edge in the first half.

Georgetown's next contest is Friday night at 7:30 p.m. when they travel to Tampa, Fla. to take on the South Florida Bulls. It will be the second game of a five-game conference road swing.
