Oct. 16, 2005 Washington, D.C. - Two goals in the first 30 minutes of play led the No. 18-ranked West Virginia Mountaineers (9-3-3, 6-1-1) past Georgetown women's soccer, 2-1, this afternoon at N. Kehoe Field. The Hoyas (11-5-1, 4-4-1) managed a goal late in the first half, but were unable to even the score, as they dropped their second game in a row. West Virginia controlled play much of the first half and broke through for the game's first goal at 11:47. Ashley Darcy sent a cross from the far side of the field to Marisa Kanela at the near post. Kanela one-timed the ball back in front of the goal area, where Deana Everrett buried it in back of the net for her fourth goal of the season. The Mountaineers added to their lead less than 17 minutes later. A breakaway shot on the left side by Kim Bonilla was blocked out of bounds by sophomore keeper Jade Higgins (Island Park, N.Y.), setting up a corner kick by Cathy Abel. Off the corner on the near side, Bonilla headed the ball past a group of Hoyas in front of the net for the 2-0 Mountaineer advantage at 29:14. Georgetown fought back late in the first stanza, cutting the deficit in half on a goal by junior Chrissy Skogen (San Marino, Calif.) with 5:11 remaining. Senior Alexandra Hardy (Lakewood, Calif.) sent a feed from about 15 yards outside the box to a streaking Skogen. She settled the ball and fired a shot from just inside the box, beating a diving Lana Bannerman to the lower left corner. Skogen tallied her team-best 10th goal of the season, tying her with Jessie Beers-Altman for the program's single-season record. However, the Hoyas could not get even with the Mountaineers, who held Georgetown to only two shots in the second half, neither of them on goal. For the game, West Virginia out shot the Hoyas, 24-9, also allowing only one shot on goal - Skogen's goal. Higgins had five saves in the loss.
Prior to the game, Georgetown University and the women's soccer program honored their three graduating seniors, Ashley Darcy (Coral Springs, Fla.), Hardy and Shara McNeill (Avon, Conn.), who played their last regular season home game on the Hilltop. Georgetown concludes the 2005 regular season next weekend on the road. On Friday, the Hoyas travel to Chicago, Ill. to face DePaul at 3 p.m. and finish up with No. 8 Notre Dame on Sunday at 1 p.m. |
