Georgetown Women's Soccer Loses in Double Overtime to Pitt, 2-1

Oct. 19, 2008

Box Score

Indianola, Pa. - The No. 19/16 Georgetown women's soccer team (10-3-2) lost their second-straight contest to a BIG EAST opponent in double overtime when Pitt's Ashley Habbel scored with four seconds left and gave the Panthers (6-10-1) a 2-1 victory this afternoon.

After falling behind 1-0 in the first half, Nicole Smith (Washingtonville, N.Y.) scored her second goal of the season to even things in the 59th minute. The play started via a throw-in from freshman Samantha Baker (Long Beach, Calif./Wilson) and the ball was flicked on to Smith by senior Stephanie Zare (Lake Bluff, Ill./Lake Forest). The possession initially started in the 56th minute when Georgetown worked a corner out of the Pitt defense.

Pitt took the lead in the 30th minute after a ball was headed by a Hoya defender to Jennifer Kritch. Kritch controlled and fired home to give the Panthers a 1-0 lead. It was the first offensive chance for the Panthers in the contest and their first shot-on-goal. Except for two corner-kick opportunities produced by Georgetown, Pitt controlled the tempo for the remainder of the half.

Georgetown created the first handful of chances in the contest, but was unable to make them count against the Pitt defense and goalkeeper Morie Kephart. Zare put a shot high in the sixth minute and freshman Kelly D'Ambrisi (Trumbull, Conn./Lauralton Hall Academy) had an attempt blocked by a Panther defender in the 18th. Kephart's first action came when Baker tested her in the 24th minute with a shot-on-goal.

After Georgetown scored in the second half, Baker put another attempt over goal in the 66th minute. However, that would be the final shot of the game for the Blue & Gray. Over the final 20 minutes of regulation and both overtimes, the Hoyas were out-shot 10-0. GU had two corner attempts in the final 30 seconds of regulation, and another four minutes into the second overtime, but was not able to muster any good scoring chances.

For the game, Georgetown was out-shot 14-5, but managed to gain twice as many corner-kick opportunities. Jackie DesJardin (Sunnyvale, Calif./Archbishop Mitty) made three saves in goal for the Hoyas.

The Hoyas play their final home game of the regular season on Tuesday, October 21 at 3 p.m. against St. John's.
