Georgetown Wins it in Second Half, Defense Clamps Down, Beats USF 2-0

Oct. 23, 2007

Box Score

Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown University women's soccer team (12-5-0, 5-4-0 BIG EAST) gained a vital win on Tuesday night, defeating the University of South Florida (4-8-2, 3-5-1 BE) by the score of 2-0. Early in the second half, the Hoyas received two quick goals from Sara Jordan (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central) and Stephanie Zare (Lake Bluff, Ill./Lake Forest) to pull away from the Bulls.

After a first half which saw only five total shots, two taken by Georgetown, the Blue and Gray got on the scoreboard in the 50th minute. A short pass from Zare found Jordan in the penalty area and the senior then proceeded to tap it in past USF goalkeeper Mallori Lofton-Malachi from four yards out for her team-leading sixth goal of the season.

Two minutes later, Ingrid Wells (Upper Montclair, N.J./Montclair) crossed the ball in from the left side and Zare beat Lofton-Malachi to the far post from 12 yards out. The goal was Zare's fifth of the season while Wells' assist was her eighth, the third highest single-season total in GU history.

After allowing seven goals in the past two games, the Hoya defense was outstanding in blanking the USF offense. Senior goalkeeper Jade Higgins (Island Park, N.Y./West Hempstead) made three saves for her first win of the 2007 season. The shutout was the 19th of Higgins' career, adding to her own GU career record.

The 7 p.m. contest from the USF Soccer Stadium was a makeup of the game played on October 5 that ended prematurely due to torrential downpours and lightning. That game was called two seconds prior to the 70-minute mark, which would have made the contest official.

Georgetown returns home for its final two games this weekend as the Hoyas host Cincinnati on Friday afternoon at 3 p.m. and Louisville on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. The Sunday game will also be Senior Day at North Kehoe Field.
