Buonomo Header Helps Hoyas Win in Double-Overtime at Cincinnati, 1-0

Oct. 26, 2008

Box Score

Cincinnati, Ohio - The Georgetown University women's soccer team (13-3-2, 8-3-0) is headed to the postseason on a three-game winning streak after toppling Cincinnati (9-6-3, 5-3-3) this afternoon in double-overtime, 1-0. Sophomore Michaela Buonomo (Churchville, Pa./Council Rock) headed home the winner off a corner-kick from freshman Samantha Baker in the 107th minute. The Blue & Gray will now receive a first-round bye and host Connecticut this upcoming Sunday, November 2.

The 24 points are the highest BIG EAST regular-season total in GU history. The Hoyas also set a new school record with their 11 shutout of the season and first win ever at Cincinnati.

Jackie DesJardin (Sunnyvale, Calif./Archbishop Mitty) made five saves to increase her single-season record total to nine. The sophomore made two key saves in the second half, turning aside tries from Kendall Loggins and Julie Morrissey. On the day, the Hoyas out-shot UC 14-7 and held an 8-1 advantage in corner-kick opportunities.

Courtney Kent (Laguna Niguel, Calif./St. Margaret's Episcopal) collected a game-high six shots for the Hoyas, and had as many shots in the second half (four) as Cincinnati. Her closest call came in the 88th minute when her header was cleared off the goal-line by a Cincinnati defender. Stephanie Zare (Lake Bluff, Ill./Lake Forest), Camille Trujillo (Albuquerque, N.M./St. Pius X), Caitlin Durkee (St. Paul, Minn./Como Park) and Baker all managed to get looks at goal in the second stanza, but none could break the deadlock.

In the first half, Kent went wide on GU's first opportunity in the ninth minute and UC was able to counter and create a chance for Morrissey, which was saved. Kent missed wide again shortly after, in the 13th minute. The Hoyas only had two more quality looks at scoring in the first 45, but Zare was denied by Bearcat goalkeeper Andrea Kaminski and Trujillo fired high, three minutes later

The Bearcats had two chances in the first overtime as Kelli Pawelko was stopped by DesJardin and a Morrissey header with seven seconds left was also saved. GU had a chance before the goal in the second overtime but defender Laura Snyder (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) had her attempt blocked
