Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown women's soccer team (12-7-1) defeated Syracuse, 1-0, at the Soccer Stadium at the Lampe Athletics Complex tonight. The Hoyas advance to the quarterfinals of the BIG EAST Championship when they travel to Notre Dame on Sunday.
Statistically, tonight's game was all too similar to the Oct. 2 regular season match-up between the Hoyas and the Orange (4-12-4) when SU defeated Georgetown, 1-0, in double-overtime. Georgetown took eight shots to the seven taken by Syracuse; garnering six corner kicks to Syracuse's four. Just like the regular season game, there would only be one goal scored. However, this time, it would be Georgetown who came out victorious.
The lone goal came at 37:05 when sophomore forward Elaina Filauro (Denville, N.J./Morris Knolls) slipped by a defender to take an open shot from five yards out. Filauro was unassisted and scored her sixth goal of the season.
Syracuse goalkeeper Emily Kowalczyk would hold off a total of five attempts by the Hoyas, but GU only needed one goal tonight.
Sophomore goalkeeper Jade Higgins (Island Park, N.Y./West Hempstead) posted three saves and recorded her seventh shutout of the season. Higgins tied the school single-season shutout record and extends her career shutouts to 13.
This is the first BIG EAST Championship game the Hoyas have won. Prior to tonight's game, the Hoyas were 0-3 in BIG EAST Championship games.
The Hoyas travel to South Bend, Ind. to take on Notre Dame on Sunday, Oct. 30 at 1 p.m. on Alumni Field for the quarterfinals of the BIG EAST Championship. The Hoyas suffered a 6-1 loss to the Fighting Irish one week earlier.
