April 4, 2002 WASHINGTON, D.C.— The Georgetown University women’s soccer team will travel to Germantown, Maryland on Saturday, April 6 to participate in the KICKS for Breast Cancer Tournament to be held at the Maryland SoccerPlex. The tournament features seven intercollegiate and professional matches and will end at 7:15 p.m. when Mia Hamm and the Washington Freedom take on the Tarheels of UNC-Chapel Hill. The Hoyas, who raised over $3,000 for local breast cancer charities, will compete against Loyola at 10 a.m. and William & Mary at 3:30 p.m. Georgetown goes into the KICKS Tournament with a 1-0-1 record. The Hoyas defeated George Mason, 3-0, and finished with a 0-0 tie against Navy. Next up for Georgetown are road matches against Virginia Commonwealth University on April 10th at 8 p.m., the Kirkwood Delaware Tournament on April 14th and the George Mason Tournament on April 20th. Georgetown finished the 2001 season with an 11-7-1 overall record, a 1-4-1 BIG EAST record and an ECAC Division I Women’s Soccer title. The Hoyas were ranked as high as ninth in the Mid-Atlantic Region by Soccer Buzz and the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) throughout the season. The 2001 season also boasted the first nationally-ranked recruiting class in Georgetown history. The new Hoyas were ranked 37th in the nation out of 300 Division I schools and sixth in the Mid-Atlantic Region.
