Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown University women's soccer team closes the regular season this weekend with games at Louisville on Friday night at 7 p.m. and Cincinnati on Sunday at 1 p.m. The Hoyas will look to rebound from last week's pair of double-overtime losses with strong performances against the Cardinals and Bearcats. Heading into their final two games, Georgetown is in good position to make their second-consecutive BIG EAST Tournament and fourth in five years. Junior Toni Marie Hudson (Coral Springs, Fla./Stoneman Douglas) is second only to M.A.C. Hermann Trophy Award winner and Notre Dame senior, Kerri Hanks, in the BIG EAST in points and trails Hanks and ND's Melissa Henderson in goals. Hudson's 10 goals have her tied for the GU single-season record that is shared by Chrissy Skogen and Jessie Beers-Altman and the junior is currently third on the single-season points list with 24. This season, she was named the BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week and named to various other "Teams of the Week" on September 22. Sophomore Michaela Buonomo (Churchville, Pa./Council Rock), a Freshman All-American last season and Weekly BIG EAST Honor Roll selection this season, has helped lead a defense that has shutout nine opponents, including St. John's this week. Sophomore goalkeeper Jackie DesJardin (Sunnyvale, Calif./Archbishop Mitty) is fourth in the conference in save percentage and sixth in the BIG EAST in goals-allowed average. She is also second on the career-shutouts list to Jade Higgins (`08) and earlier this week, tied her own single-season record of seven. Freshman Samantha Baker (Long Beach, Calif./Wilson) ranks fourth in the conference behind Hanks, Henderson and Hudson with 22 points, while ranking fourth in the conference with nine assists. She has also attained a spot on every top-10 single-season offensive lists at GU (goals, assists and points) in just her first year of action. Baker has been named to the BIG EAST Honor Roll and earned a BIG EAST Rookie of the Week honor for scoring twice in a win over UMBC. Sophomore Caitlin Durkee (St. Paul, Minn./Como Park) ranks 11th nationally with 10 assists. Her helpers are the third-highest single-season total in GU history.
LOUISVILLE
The Cardinals went 2-0-0 last week, including a 1-0 win at Marquette in double-overtime last Friday. Louisville also won at USF 2-0 last Sunday. The Cardinals picked up their first weekend road sweep since becoming a member of the BIG EAST in 2005. Junior Katie Zoeller notched a pair of shutouts over the weekend, her second and third of the season, helping the Cards to a three-game winning streak. This Sunday, October 26, against Villanova, will be Senior Day for the Cardinals and the game will be carried live locally on the Cardinal Sports Network and WHAS-TV in Louisville. Eight of the top 10 scorers this season for the Cards are underclassmen. Cardinal Notes The Cardinals incoming freshman class included a pair of NSCAA/adidas High School All-Americans in Caitlin Beck and Ashley Auld. Louisville is aiming for a third consecutive birth into the NCAA Championship. Junior Lindsay Boling leads the team in goals and points while sophomore Caitlin Rehder tops the squad in assists. The Bearcats went 1-0-1 last week, including a 2-1 win at USF last Friday and a 1-1 tie at Marquette last Sunday. The Bearcats have totaled 15 points in the National Division standings, their highest point total since joining the league in 2005. In addition the Bearcats have posted their highest win total since 2002. Cincinnati is under the direction of first-year head coach Michelle Salmon Bearcats Notes Salmon arrives at UC via Ball State, where she guided the Cardinals to back-to-back MAC regular season championships, while compiling a 26-9-5 record, including a 17-3-2 mark in league play. UC returned nine starters from last year's squad, including 12 players who saw action in at least 14 games. Cincinnati returned its top seven point-scorers and 96 percent of its total scoring. All-BIG EAST Second Team junior forward Erin MacDonald accounted for 21 points (seven goals and seven assists) last season, leading the team and tying for sixth in the league. She also netted two game-winning goals. Freshman Julie Morrissey leads the team in goals and points, while senior Kristin May and MacDonald are tied for the team lead in assists. May is second on the team in points and tied for second on the team in goals with junior Melissa Bigg. Junior goalkeeper Andrea Kaminski started all 18 matches last season for UC, finishing with a 1.72 goals-against average. Kaminski led the BIG EAST in saves compiling 110 for the season and totaled a save percentage of .769. Kaminski has started 15 games in goal for UC, compiling eight wins and three shutouts. |
