Box Score - Evansville
Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown University softball team concluded play today at the Kennesaw State Invitational, a round-robin tournament held in Kennesaw, Ga. The Hoyas dropped two games at the Bobby Bailey Complex on KSU's campus with a 10-2 loss to Evansville and then a 7-4 loss to Miami (Ohio). The Hoyas are now 0-4 on the young season. Senior Cathy Richter (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill East) recorded the first-ever homerun in program history in the top of the seventh inning against Miami.
Miami (Ohio) took a quick 6-0 lead after two innings. In the top of the third inning with freshman Sarah Kamenski (Mountain View, Calif./St. Francis) on first, freshman Demetria Cipriano (Coral Springs, Fla./Coral Springs Charter) laced a double to right centerfield as Kamenski advanced to third to put both were in scoring position. Freshman Jadig Garcia (Zebulon, N.C./East Wake) knocked a single to left centerfield to earn two RBI as Kamenski and Cipriano rounded home plate. With Garcia on third, freshman Suria Bahadue (Miami, Fla./Monsignor Edward Pace) hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield for Garcia to score giving Bahadue the RBI. With two walks, the Hoyas would leave three stranded on base to end the third inning.
Miami went on to score its last run in the fourth inning to take a 7-3 lead. Richter's seventh-inning homerun would cut the lead to three, but it would not be enough as Miami's Meredith Linch pitched all seven innings allowing seven hits and striking out 10, two of which came in the last inning. Freshman Jennifer Connell (Roswell, Ga./Roswell) pitched six innings for the Blue and Gray, allowing 12 hits and recording one strikeout, dropping to 0-2 on the year.
Against Evansville, the Purple Aces got off to a quick start scoring two runs in the first inning. The Hoyas answered back with one run of their own. Garcia was in scoring position after stealing second base, when Bahadue's hit was mishandled by third baseman Lissa Felhman, allowing Garcia to score, and cutting Evansville's lead by one.
Evansville would go on to score one run in the third inning and seven in the fourth to take a 10-1 lead. In the bottom of the fifth inning, senior Lacey Campbell (Louisville, Ky./The Louisville Collegiate School) ripped a triple to right centerfield to start the inning. Garcia hit a sacrifice fly to right field, recording the RBI as Campbell ran home to score the final GU run of the game.
Kamenski pitched all five innings to take the loss and fell to 0-2 on the season.
The Hoyas return to the diamond next weekend, February 23-25, when they compete at the Elon Invitational held at East Field on the Elon campus in Elon, N.C. The first day of the invitational features a matchup against Ohio with first pitch scheduled for 11 a.m. to be followed by a game against Rider starting at 3 p.m. |
