Softball Downed in a Doubleheader at UMBC

April 4, 2006

Box Score

Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown softball team continued their inaugural season swoon with a doubleheader loss at UMBC today. The Retrievers notched a 15-1 victory in the first game and won 19-1 in the second game.

The Hoyas (1-17) tallied three hits in the first game. Freshman shortstop Katherine Incantalupo (Forest Hills, N.Y./Townsend Harris) recorded a single in the first inning while sophomore Brittany Sonnichsen (Madison, Conn./Choate Rosemary Hall) singled through the left side of the infield in the second inning.

Georgetown's offense came together in the third inning when Incantalupo put another single up the middle. A sacrifice bunt from sophomore Katharine Lang (Princeton Jct., N.J./The Lawrenceville School) advanced Incantalupo to second, who would then steal third base. Freshman Katie Zoch (Hackensack, N.J./Hackensack)hit a groundball and reached first base on an error by the shortstop, enabling Incantalupo to score.

The Retrievers answered the Hoya offense with five runs in the third inning en route to the 15-1 victory.

Freshman pitcher Courtney Clark (Ridgewood, N.J./Choate Rosemary Hall) allowed 15 runs off 14 hits in four innings of work.

The second game saw another three hits from the Hoya offense. A single from the bat of junior catcher Cathy Richter (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill East) in the first inning would help load the bases, however the Retriever pitcher left the three runners stranded.

Clark singled to right field in the second inning while sophomore Erin Doherty (Morristown, N.J./Morristown) recorded a single in the fourth inning.

The Hoyas had a scoring opportunity with freshman Christina Gallinari (Crestwood, N.Y./Loyola School) on second and Sonnichsen on first base in the fifth inning. Lang grounded out to the pitcher advancing Gallinari to third and Sonnichsen to second. A passed ball allowed Gallinari to score the lone run and advanced Sonnichsen to third.

Clark pitched four innings allowing 19 runs off 17 hits.

The Hoyas return to action on Wednesday, April 5 when they travel to Mount St. Mary's for a doubleheader. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m.
