Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown University softball team swept the Coppin State Eagles today in a doubleheader at the Mount Vernon Athletic Complex, 2-1 in the first game and 6-3 in the second. The Hoyas improve to 4-20, with three of its four wins coming over CSU, now 14-29. The Hoyas evened the overall head-to-head series at three apiece with the sweep.
With the score tied at 1-all in the sixth inning, freshman second baseman Katherine Incantalupo (Forest Hills, N.Y./Townsend Harris) struck a single up the middle. A sacrifice bunt from sophomore Katharine Lang (Princeton, Jct., N.J./The Lawrenceville School) advanced Incantalupo to second. Junior shortstop Cathy Richter (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill East)laced a double to right-centerfield, recording the RBI as Incantalupo scored the game-winning run.
Freshman pitcher Courtney Clark (Ridgewood, N.J./Choate Rosemary Hall) went the distance and allowed one run off five hits and struck out three. This was Clark's third win on the year.
In the first game, Coppin State jumped out to an early lead with one run scored in the second inning.
The Hoyas tied the game in the fourth inning, sophomore catcher Brittany Sonnichsen (Madison, Conn./Choate Rosemary Hall) ripped a triple to right-centerfield to put herself in scoring position. Richter struck a single and reached first on a throwing error by the third baseman. Sonnichsen scored to tie the game at one.
In the second half of the twinbill, the Eagles would score two runs to open the game, but the Hoyas answered right back with four runs of their own in the first.
With the bases loaded, Richter singled to left-centerfield, recording two RBI when Incantalupo and Lang crossed the plate; Sonnichsen scored on an error by the shortstop. With the bases loaded again, a wild pitch allowed Richter to score the fourth run of the inning.
The Hoyas extended the lead in the second inning when freshman designated player Katie Zoch (Hackensack, N.J./Hackensack) nabbed a single up the middle to score Sonnichsen, who was hit by a pitch and moved to second on a walk to Richter.
With Lang on third in the fourth inning, Richter grounded out on a sacrifice bunt for Lang to score the sixth run of the game.
The Eagles scored a run in the sixth inning, cutting the lead to three, but three quick outs would end the inning.
Freshman pitcher Anna Wheatley (Indiatlantic, Fla./Melbourne Central Catholic) pitched five innings, allowing three runs off two hits and struck out two. Wheatley recorded her first win of the season. Clark pitched two innings, holding the Eagles to one hit.
These are the first back-to-back wins in program history. Lang stole one base today for a team-high 15 on the season.
"I think today was certainly a great day for Georgetown softball," Head Coach Pat Conlan said. "The girls have worked hard over the course of the year and this was certainly a result of that. I think the last few doubleheaders, we have put our entire game together - pitching effort, solid defense and good hits - put those together and good things will come of it. These wins exemplify this team's desire to play hard and most of all, their resiliency."
The Hoyas return to the diamond on Friday, April 28 when they travel to local foe, Howard, for a makeup game at Banneker Stadium as last weekend's doubleheader was rained out. Only one game will be played with first pitch slated for 3 p.m.
