Georgetown Women Defeat Holy Cross in Weekend Swimming and Diving Action

1/28/2003

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Georgetown swimming and diving team competed in two events this weekend, challenging Holy Cross on Friday and Boston College and Maine on Saturday.  The men defeated Holy Cross 144-91 before splitting the second meet with a 181-52 victory over Maine and a closely contested 123-113 loss to BC.  The women outpaced Holy Cross 142-93 in the first meet but fell on Saturday 133-109 against Maine and 188-54 versus Boston College.

Against Holy Cross, Liz D'Auria (Newton, Mass./Newton South) and Katie Amaro (Shreveport, La.) displayed dominance, earning two first place finishes each.  Amaro took the 200 and 500 Free while D'Auria raced to first place finishes in the 50 and 100 Free as well as anchoring Georgetown's first place 200 Medley Relay team.  On the men's side, Shondai Enters (Tokyo, Japan/St. Mary's International) raced to first place finishes in the 50 and 100 Free while anchoring a first place 200 Medley Relay finish.

Facing stiffer competition against Maine and Boston College, the women struggled in some events but Amaro and diver Juliana Bonilla (West Covina, Calif./Covina High) were able to earn some points for the Hoyas with strong results.  Amaro touched third in the 200 and 500 Free while Bonilla earned enough points to take second in the 3 Meter Dive and third in the 1 Meter Dive.  Michelle Herd (Canton Center, Conn./Westminster) had a second place finish in the 200 Back.

The men fared slightly better as Enters continued to swim strongly, earning first place finishes in the 50 and 100 Free while senior captain Bryan Evangelista Northport, N.Y./St. Anthony's) stormed to the fore in the 200 Free.  Diver Alan Fong (San Rafael,Calif./Marin Catholic) outpointed the competition in both the 1 Meter and 3 Meter Dive while Stephen Ferguson (Wilmington, Del./Salesianum High) took second in the 200 Back and third in the 200 IM.  Heath Walden (Scituate, Mass./Boston College High) and Kevin Rieffel (Ambler, Pa./La Salle College High) each had second place finishes in the 200 Fly and 500 Free respectively.

Perhaps Georgetown's most impressive showing was in the 400 Medley Relay where the team of Michael Bayer (West Chester, Pa./Bishop Shanahan), Ted Lin (Columbus, Ohio/Columbus Academy), Don Ball (Horsham,Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) and Evangelista touched 0.81 seconds ahead of a talented field of swimmers to take first.

The Hoyas travel to Drexel on Saturday, February 1 to challenge the Dragons at 2:00 p.m.
