Hoya Women's Swimming & Diving Posts Wins Over Howard, Providence

GU beats the Bison, 144-77, then tops the Friars, 131-104.

Georgetown's women's swimming and diving teams added two victories to the win column, upping its record to 6-6. The Hoyas defeated Howard by a score of 144-77, on January 29, and the next day came away with a victory over Providence, 131-104. GU is currently on a four-meet winning streak.

Georgetown swam well in a victory against Howard, finishing in first place in eight of the thirteen events. Catherine Hayes (Fr., Charlottesville, Va./Ablemarle) won both the 1000 freestyle (11:08.25) and the 500 freestyle (5:27.75). Also Rene Pierpont (So., Roseville, Minn./Roseville) swept the diving events with victories in the one meter (227.85) and the three meter (212.85). GU's 400 medley team of Meghan Welch (Sr., West Chazy, N.Y./Beekmantown), Caragh Moynihan (So., New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan), Liz D'Auria (Fr., Newton, Mass./Newton South) and Sophia Adkison (So., Novato, Calif./Novato) won convincingly with a time of 4:06.29. First place kudos on the day also go to Amanda Anderson (So., Denville, N.J./Morristown-Beard) in the 200 freestyle (1:59.44), Sophia Adkison in the 50 freestyle (25.45), and Caragh Moynihan in the 100 fly (1:00.43).

Outstanding swims on the day were turned in by Sarah Rose (Sr., Houston, Texas/Memorial), second place in the 1000 freestyle (11:25.33), and Lauren Moynihan (Fr., South Hadley, Mass./South Hadley), second place in the 200 freestyle (1:59.61). Other second place honors go to Meghan Welch's (Sr., West Chazy, N.Y./Beekmantown) 200 I.M. time of 2:15.14, Allison Linden (So., Darien, Conn./Darien) off the one meter (223.8) and three meter diving (208.8) boards, and Anderson in the 100 fly (1:05.06). D'Auria touched the wall in the 100 freestyle with a time of 56.13, and Christine Gibadlo (Sr., Middletown, N.J./Middletown) swam the 500 freestyle in 5:30.18. On Saturday January 30, Georgetown hosted Big East rival Providence and swam away to victory by a score of 131-104.

L. Moynihan won the 1000 freestyle (10:41.49) and captured victory in the 500 freestyle (5:16.71). For the second straight meet, Pierpont dominated the diving events winning first place in both the one meter (204.15) and the three meter (202.58). GU swept the 50 freestyle with D'Auria (25.38), Adkison (25.46) and Gibadlo (26.19) touching the wall with a one, two, three finish. Francesca DiSilvio's (Fr., Hingham, Mass./Hingham) 200 backstroke (25.38), C. Moynihan's 200 I.M. (2:17.09), and the 200 medley team (1:55.03) of Adkison, Welch, C. Moynihan and D'Auria turned in other superb efforts garnering first place finishes.

Other major contributors to the Hoyas' victory came from Hayes, who finished second in the 200 fly (2:17.81) and Genna McKeel (Fr., Tampa, Fla./Berkeley Prep), who posted second in the 200 freestyle (2:00.58). Second place honors also went to the Hoya's Anderson in the 1000 freestyle (10:50.61), Adkison's 25.46 in the 50 freestyle and 55.23 in the 100 freestyle, and Kristie Hunt's (Fr., Glenview, Ill./New Trier), 200 I.M. time of 2:17.22.

GU faces Drexel on Saturday, February 5, at 1:00 p.m. at Yates Field House for its final home meet of the season.
