Washington, D.C. - (Feb. 7) Georgetown's women's swimming and diving team won its fifth straight dual meet of the season as senior Meghan Welch (West Chazy, N.Y./Beekmantown) posted two victories and the Hoyas swept two events in a 182-116 win over Drexel on Saturday, February 5, at the Yates Field House. It was the Hoyas' final dual meet of the season prior to the BIG EAST Championships and the last home swim meet for six GU seniors.
Welsh won the 100 breaststroke in a time of 109.66 and led a sweep of the 200 breaststroke (2:27.06) as Genna McKeel (Fr., Tampa, Fla./Berkeley Prep) and Kristie Hunt (Fr., Glenview, Ill./New Trier) followed with times of 2:29.78 and 2:39.54, respectively. Hunt also won the 200 I.M. with a mark of 2:15.87, and was second in the 100 breaststroke (1:10.92). Sophia Adkison (So., Novato, Calif./Novato) notched second in the 100 backstroke (1:02.50), but led a sweep of the 100 freestyle event. She touched the wall in 55.31 in front of Liz D'Auria's (Fr., Newton, Mass./Newton South) time of 56.19 and Christine Gibadlo's (Sr., Middletown, N.J./Middletown) 56.66 mark. D'Auria was victorious, however, in the 50 freestyle (25.29).
Other first-place finishes go to Lauren Moynihan (Fr., South Hadley, Mass./South Hadley), who registered a 10:42.16 in the 1000 freestyle and Amanda Anderson's (So., Denville, N.J./Morristown-Beard) 5:16.20 tally in the 500 freestyle.
GU also had several other outstanding second-place swims. Lauren Schmidt (So., Somerset, N.J./Bishop George Ahr) seized a 2:15.54 time in the 200 fly and a 59.76 mark in the 100 fly. Anderson posted a 10:42.63 in the 1000 freestyle, while Erin Lenahan (Fr., Western Springs, Ill./St. Ignatius College Prep.) swam the 50 freestyle in 25.70, and Liz Maxwell (Fr., Pittsford, N.Y./Mercy) touched the wall in 2:17.26 in the 200 backstroke. Rene Pierpont (So., Roseville, Minn./Roseville) garnered second-place honors in the one-meter diving event with a score of 199.35, while Allison Linden (So., Darien, Conn./Darien) placed second off the three-meter board (176.15).
The Hoyas won both relay events as the team comprised of Francesca DiSilvio (Fr., Hingham, Mass./Hingham), Hunt, Schmidt, and Lenahan recorded a time of 1:54.22 in the 200-medley relay, while Schmidt, D'Auria, Lenahan, and Adkison bested the 200 freestyle relay field with a time of 1:40.57.
The Hoyas will be in action again February 17-19 at the BIG EAST Championships which will be held at the Goodwill Games Swim Complex in Uniondale, N.Y. Preliminary events will start at 10:30 a.m. each day with the finals beginning at 6:30 p.m.
