The Georgetown University men’s and women’s swim teams saw a pair of record-breaking performances at the George Mason Patriot Invitational Swim Meet over the weekend of December 1-3.
During Saturday's competition, sophomore Lauren Moynihan (South Hadley, Mass.) and junior Lauren Schmidt (Somerset, N.J.) each broke Georgetown individual records in their respective races. Moynihan notched a time of 4:42.33 in the 400 IM, placing 23rd overall. By breaking the old time of 4:42.51 set in 1997 by Caroline Arpe, the sophomore earned her fourth school record. In the 100 backstroke, Schmidt placed 14th with a time of 1:00.40. The finish broke Carrie Shelton’s record of 1:01.03 set in 1997.
The Hoya women counted on their record-breaking teammates, along with a well-rounded team effort, during the Invitational. While Moynihan and Schmidt turned in valuable individual performances, several relay teams also notched strong finishes. On Friday, the squad of junior captain Caragh Moynihan (New Canaan, Conn.), sophomore Liz D’Auria (Newton, Mass.), sophomore Erin Lenahan (Western Springs, Ill.) and Schmidt placed sixth in the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:39.58. The next best performance by the women came on Saturday when Caragh Moynihan placed 10th in the 100 freestyle with her time of 59.04.
Overall, the Georgetown men garnered 471 points to finish in fourth place while the women placed 10th with 103.50 points.
The men had a strong Friday performance and saw themselves sitting in second place at day’s end. Junior Will Miller (Farmingdale, N.J.) placed third in the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:45.08. Junior Chris Lengle (Arlington, Va.) also earned a third-place finish by virtue of his 21.43 time in the 50 freestyle. Performing just as well was the 400 medley relay team of Miller, Lengle, sophomore Bryan Evangelista (Northport, N.Y.) and senior Steve Brown (Newton, Pa.), who recorded a time of 3:34.70 en route to a third-place finish.
Over the weekend, it was Lengle who led the way for the men’s team. On Saturday, the junior placed fourth in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:43.69. He also participated in two relays that finished third. On Saturday, the team of freshman Shodai Enters (Tokyo, Japan), Lengle, Evangelista and Miller finished third in the 800 freestyle relay with a 7:06.56 combined time. Also, during Sunday's races, the squad consisting of freshman Dan Connelly (Gladwyne, Pa.), Lengle, Enters and Evangelista placed third in the 400 freestyle relay with their 3:11.23 finish.
