Washington, D.C. - At the final day of the VCU 4-1 Invitational, the Georgetown University women's tennis team split a pair of matches to end the opening tournament with a 1-3 record. The Hoyas knocked off Drexel, 4-1 earlier on Sunday, but fell to host and No. 49-ranked Virginia Commonwealth, 4-1 to end tournament play. In the win over Drexel, Georgetown opened by taking the doubles point, as freshmen Natalie Newman (Wayzata, Minn./Blake) and Taylor Martin (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central) swept through Mellissa Lewis and Ashley Doriss, 6-1, 6-0. The Hoyas followed by taking three of the four singles matches for their first win of the spring. Sophomore Stephanie Cohen (Fayetteville, N.Y./DeWitt) breezed past Emily Lewis, 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1 singles. Junior Eilleen Boyle (Burr Ridge, Ill./St. Ignatius Prep) needed three sets but escaped with a win over Hana Stecova at second singles, 6-7(5), 6-2, 10-5. Also, picking up a singles win was senior Kristen Dew (Knoxville, Tenn./Webb) at fourth singles, beating Kristy Pohn in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4. Martin picked up the lone point for Georgetown against VCU, edging Anne Shelton at fourth singles, 7-6(4), 5-7, 10-7. The Hoyas return to action on Saturday, February 11 when they begin BIG EAST competition with a road tilt against Seton Hall at 1 p.m.
