Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown University women's tennis team lost a heartbreaking match to crosstown foe George Washington, 4-3, today at the East Potomac Tennis Center in Washington, D.C. The Hoyas drop to 1-8 overall on the spring season. Due to time constraints, singles was played first followed by doubles. With a 3-2 lead, GW's Verena Knoedler took a three-set match over senior co-captain Eileen Boyle (Burr Ridge, Ill./St. Ignatius Prep) to clinch the win. Junior Stephanie Cohen (Fayetteville, N.Y./DeWitt) continued her standout season, winning her fifth singles match to start the day. Colonial wins at the top spot and at the sixth singles position would give GW the 2-1 edge. Junior Liz Winokur (West Palm Beach, Fla./Cardinal Newman) would level the match at two points apiece with a decisive win at three. A tight three-set match at the fourth position would give George Washington the 3-2 lead. After the match was already decided, the Hoyas went on and swept doubles-play, a feat they had yet to achieve this season. The doubles tandem of sophomore Courtney Olsen (Englewood, Colo./Colorado Academy) and Cohen remained undefeated with an 8-3 victory for their third-straight win while sophomores Kelsey Darnell (Annapolis, Md./Severn) and Briana Kearney (Lake Bluff, Ill./Lake Forest) won their second-straight match to also remain undefeated. Georgetown returns to the court on Saturday, March 17 when they travel to Norfolk, Va. for a match at Old Dominion. The match is slated for 1 p.m.
