Women's Tennis Starts 2005 With Win Over GW and faces Other Rivals

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The Hoya women pulled off a surprising upset victory over local rival George Washington on Sunday afternoon February 13 at the Army Navy Country Club. Georgetown won the doubles competition by a very narrow margin and then won three of six singles matches to win the match by a 4-3 score. Indoubles, the #3 team of Kristin Dew (Nashville, Tenn./Webb School)and Sana Malouf (McLean, Va./St. Stephen's & St. Agnes School) won 8-6 over GW's Woodward and Frisch. The #1 doubles team of Liz Winokur (West Palm Beach, Fla./Cardinal Newman) and Steph Cohen (Fayetteville, N.Y./DeWitt) were defeated 8-2 by GW's top doubles team. So, the deciding doubles match was the victory by Liddy Bartell (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif./Torrey Pines) and Adriann Gin (Honolulu, Hawaii/Punahou School) at #2 doubles where they edged GW's Swenson and Bode by a 9-8(2) score. With a 1-0 lead from the doubles competition, the Hoyas started strongly in singles play, winning the first sets in four of six singles matches. GU captured their second team point as Cohen's opponent retired after the first set was won by Cohen 6-1. Winokur was defeated at #1 singles by GW's Anastasia Skravonskia giving GWits firstteam point. Malouf lost a close 6-7,3-6 decision at #6 singles, and Bartell was defeated at #3 singles in an extended three set battle 6-3,2-6,1-6. With GW holding a 3-2 lead, Georgetown won the last two matches on the court. Dew recorded a 7-6(3), 2-6, 6-3 win at #5 singles over GW's Watkins, and freshman Gin won the last match of the day, a 7-5,2-6,6-3 victory over Colonial Michelle Alexander. Doubles Singles Final Score- Georgetown-4, George Washington-3 Nationally Ranked Maryland Tops Georgetown Georgetown faced a nationally ranked squad for the second time in two weeks when the Hoyas visited College Park for a match against the Maryland Terrapins. Georgetown competed well against a talented and deep Maryland team. Georgetown, however, was unable to win any matches on the day. Georgetown vs #61 Maryland Doubles Singles Final Score- Georgetown-0, #61 Maryland-7 Georgetown Record BIG EAST Conference Victory over PittsburghGeorgetown downed Pittsburgh by a 6-1 score to open their 2005 BIG EAST Conference schedule with an important victory. Georgetown hopes to qualify for the BIG EAST Conference Championship for the first time since 2000, and the opening weekend win against Pittsburgh keeps them on pace with their goal. Georgetown fell behind in the match during the doubles competition as Pittsburgh won the #2 and #3 doubles matches to secure a 1-0 lead from the doubles competition. But the Hoyas were especially resilient and their determined play yielded six singles victories. Steph Cohen (Fayetteville, N.Y./DeWitt) led the way with a 6-2, 6-2 victory at #2 singles. The clinching fourth team point came from the racquet of Adriann Gin (Honolulu, Hawaii/Punahou School) a 6-2,6-4 winner at #4 singles. The final two Hoya wins went to three sets as Kristin Dew (Nashville, Tenn./Webb School) won 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 at #5 singles, and Sana Malouf (McLean, Va./St. Stephen's & St. Agnes School) won 6-7(5), 7-5, 10-8 at #6 singles. Georgetown started the 2004 BIG EAST Conference schedule with a 6-1 victory at Pittsburgh, so the 2005 squad is off to a good start in BIG EAST play. Georgetown vs Pittsburgh Doubles Singles Final Score- Georgetown-6, Pittburgh-1 Georgetown Falls to Nationally Ranked VCU and East Carolina at the VCU Invitational Georgetown opened the 2005 spring season with two losses at the VCU Invitational. The Hoyas opened the day with a tough loss against East Carolina and closed the day with losing to host and #56 ranked Virginia Commonwealth.
