Sept. 25, 2007 Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown University women's tennis team was victorious in all three events at the 2007 Georgetown Classic held last weekend at the McDonough Tennis Complex. Fourth-seeded junior Courtney Olsen (Englewood, Colo./Colorado Academy) won the singles main draw while freshman Maxi Thiels won the singles consolation draw. The top-seeded duo of seniors Stephanie Cohen (Fayetteville, N.Y./DeWitt) and Liz Winokur (West Palm Beach, Fla./Cardinal Newman) took the doubles draw. Olsen cruised into the finals dropping just one set to freshman teammate Carolina Kuehn (Birmingham, Ala./Mountain Brook) in the semifinals. Before Kuehn was knocked off in the semifinals by Olsen, she took out second-seeded Erin Godly of Marist in three sets. The first two sets were close, but Kuehn closed out the match with a quick 6-1 third set. Olsen won the finals handily over top-seeded Christine Ong of Marist in straight sets (6-1, 6-1). Ong defeated two Hoyas en route to the finals, eliminating junior Briana Kearney (Lake Bluff, Ill./Lake Forest) in the second round and then Winokur in a tight three-setter to advance to the semifinals. Thiels won the consolation draw by winning two very difficult matches, topping Marist's Cassie Strange in the semifinals and beating classmate Alex Sebia (Plains, Pa./Scranton Prep) in a third-set super tiebreaker to win the event. Cohen and Winokur won a hard-fought battle to take the doubles crown over Marist's second-seeded Godley and Ashley Strange in the finals. Prior to that round, Cohen and Winokur had given up just four games in two matches.
The Hoyas return to action when they play this weekend at the George Mason Invitational in Fairfax, Va. |
