Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown women's tennis team hosted the 2006 Georgetown Classic last weekend at the McDonough Tennis Complex and sent two players to the semifinals of the women's singles main draw.
Juniors Steph Cohen (Fayetteville, N.Y./DeWitt) and captain Liz Winokur (West Palm beach, Fla./Cardinal Newman) reached the semifinals of the women's singles main draw, the two were on opposite sides of the draw. Cohen lost to the top-seeded and eventual champion, Kendall Swenson of George Washington. She reached the semifinals after defeating fellow Hoya, sophomore Courtney Olsen (Englewood, Colo./Colorado Academy), in a tough two-setter (6-4, 7-6[4]).
Winokur lost to Marist's Cassandra Strange in a tight two-setter. Winokur paired with fellow junior Adriann Gin (Honolulu, Hawaii/Punahou School) to reach the semifinals before losing to Strange and her sister Alexandra, the eventual champions.
Senior captain Eileen Boyle (Burr Ridge, Ill./St. Ignatius Prep) reached the quarterfinals after defeating Michelle Styler of George Washington (6-2, 6-1) and teammate, freshman Shelly Murveit (Portola Valley, Calif./Menlo-Atherton). Boyle also reached the quarterfinals of the doubles draw with partner Olsen.
Freshman Kelsey Darnell (Annapolis, Md./Severn) got through to the semifinals of the consolation draw, losing in a tight three-set decision to Mirelva Colon of Marist, the eventual champion of the consolation draw.
Gin and Murveit both reached the second round of the main draw.
The Hoyas return to the court on Saturday, October 7 when they host Delaware at the McDonough Tennis Complex. The match is slated for noon.
