WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Georgetown women's tennis team has received its first invitation to the BIG EAST Conference Women's Tennis Championship since 2000, as seedings for the tournament scheduled to begin on Thursday, April 17, were announced on Monday afternoon.

The No. 12 Hoyas will take on the fifth-seeded DePaul Blue Demons at noon in Tampa, Fla. It will be GU's first BIG EAST Tournament match since they fell to West Virginia, 5-3 on Sunday, April 23.

"It's so exciting for the women's team," Georgetown head coach Gordie Ernst said. "We were able to do enough this season to gain respect around the conference, so it's known that we're not a team to be taken lightly. I with the play of the freshmen this year we've shown that we're a program committed to taking it to the next level."

Along with the strong play of the blue and gray's top two singles players, senior Stephanie Cohen (Fayetteville, N.Y./DeWitt) and junior Courtney Olsen (Englewood, Colo./Colorado Academy) the Hoyas have been aided in large part by a freshman class that has played strong throughout the season.

Freshman Alex Sebia (Plains, Pa./Scranton Prep) has led the way for the Hoyas, winning 10 singles matches on the season, including her last six. In the mind of Ernst, her contributions as a leader have been just as important as the point she has been adding to the team score.

"Alex has been the catalyst of this team," Ernst said. "She really loves playing, she loves to practice and she's very competitive. She compares to (men's tennis sophomore) Will Lowell in the way he came in last year and put tennis on level with academics."

Freshmen Maxi Thiels (Atlanta, Ga./The Lovett School), Elizabeth Sullivan (Potomac, Md./National Cathedral School) and Caroline Kuehn (Birmingham, Ala./Mountain Brook) have all played a role in the Hoyas return to the BIG EAST Tournament.

Thiels tied for the team lead with two match-clinching victories, while Sullivan has posted three total victories against conference opponents.
