Track & Field Concludes First Day of Competition at the BIG EAST Conference Championship

Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown University indoor track & field team finishes the first day of the BIG EAST Conference Championship held at the New Balance track & Field Center at The Armory in New York City with the men in third place of 11 teams with 22 points. They trail behind Notre Dame, who leads the field with 48 points and Louisville (42.5). The women are fourth of 14 teams with 24 points, trailing behind Louisville (36), South Florida (26.50) and Notre Dame (26). Through six events, the Georgetown squad has put up impressive performances and a majority of its student-athletes have made it back to the final day of competition.

"We had a very good first day," Georgetown Director of Track & Field and Cross Country Pat Henner said. "The vast majority of our competitors have made it back to the finals tomorrow and we had some great performances in the 5000m today with Melissa Grelli winning it on the women's side with an automatic NCAA time and Levi Miller running a gutsy race for second place. Both DMRs did a great job with the men running an automatic NCAA time and the women running a provisional NCAA qualifying time."

In the 5000m, senior Melissa Grelli (Cupertino, Calif./Presentation) won the event with an NCAA automatic qualifying time of 16:05.98. Junior Lise Ogrodnick (Beaconsfield, Quebec/Beaconsfield) placed third in the event with an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 16:31.76.

The quartet of sophomore Lauren Gregory (Denville, N.J./Morris Knolls), freshman Deidra Sanders (Memphis, Tenn./Eastern), senior Joanna Rodgers (Fairfax, Va./J.W. Robinson/NC State) and graduate student Elizabeth Maloy (Loudonville, N.Y./Academy of Holy Names) came away from the DMR with an NCAA provisional qualifying time and a second-place standing with a time of 11:17.24.

Senior Ashely Hubbard (Marshfield, Mass./Marshfield) got through the trial round in two events to qualify for the finals tomorrow as she ran the 500m in 1:13.55 and the 800m in 2:15.78. Also qualifying for the 800m final round was sophomore Renee Tomlin (Ocean City, N.J./Ocean City) timing in at 2:13.56.

With a time of 55.16, sophomore Abigail Johnson (Willingboro, N.J./Milton Hershey [Pa.]) made it to the final round of the 400m while classmate Sarah Wernik (Florence, Mass./Northhampton) qualified for the finals of the 200m with a itme of 24.73.

The women's team put their mark in the trials of the 1000m, qualifying three to the final round tomorrow. Senior Maggie Infeld (University Heights, Ohio/Beaumont) timed in at 2:53.10 with graduate student Susan Hendrick (Solomons, Md./Patuxent/Columbia University) behind her with a time of 2:54.11 and junior Avril Ogrodnick (Beaconsfield, Quebec/Beaconsfield) rounding it out with a time of 2:55.29.

For the men, the DMR squad of junior Andrew Bumbalough (Brentwood, Tenn./Brentwood Academy), freshman Sean Suber (Mitchellville, Md./DeMatha), junior Michael Banks (Holden, Mass./Watchussett Academy) and senior Matt Debole (Winston-Salemn, N.C./Mount Tabor) finished the event in second place with an automatic NCAA qualifying time of 9:33.60.

The 5000m picked up a number of points for the Hoyas as three runners donning the Blue and Gray finished in the top eight to pick up points for their squad with junior Levi Miller (Belfast, Maine/Belfast Area) leading the way with a second-place performance of 14:08.36, an NCAA provisional qualifying time. Senior Daniel Nunn (San Luis Obispo, Calif./San Luis Obispo) placed fifth (14:10.18) while junior Mike Krisch (Hopkins, Minn./Hopkins) finished eighth (14:22.39).

In the 60m, junior Kenny Mitchell (Atlanta, Ga./Westlake) hit an NCAA provisional qualifying time and qualified for the final round with a time of 6.74 while freshman Spenser Carter (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) also qualified for the final round with a time of 6.89. Those two also qualified for the final round of the 200m with Mitchell's 21.58 and Carter's 21.86 time.

In the 60m HH, freshman Chris Kinney (Stockbridge, Ga./Stockbridge) qualified for the finals with a time of 7.99 while classmate Toby Ulm (Marlborough, U.K./St. John's School and Community College) timed in at 48.22 to qualify for the final round of the 400m.

In the 1000m, nine runners qualified for the final round with four Hoyas suiting up for the finals. Debole timed in at 2:24.48 followed by freshman Alex Bean (Somers, N.Y./Somers), junior Alex Mason (Scottsdale, Ariz./Brophy Prep) and senior Neil Grosscup (Minneapolis, Minn./Southwest).

Rounding out the final round qualifiers were sophomores Kelvin Hill (Murfreesboro, Tenn./Siegel) and Danny Harris (Deer Park, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) with time of 1:53.65 and 1:51.77, respectively, in the 800m.

The two-day event concludes tomorrow with the first event at 8 a.m. and the awards ceremony at 3:20 p.m.
