Arlisa Hagan

Player Profile

Position:
Head Coach

Experience:
1st Season

Arlisa Hagan was named the head coach of the Georgetown University women's volleyball program in November of 2005 as announced by Athletics Director Bernard Muir. Hagan takes over for Li Liu, who resigned after seven years at the helm.

Hagan comes to the Hilltop after a successful four-year stint as an assistant at the University of Florida, where she helped the Gators reach two Final Fours and was the program's recruiting coordinator, bringing in two classes that were rated among the top-10 in the country.

"We're thrilled to have someone with Arlisa's experience and expertise at the national level coming to Georgetown," Muir said. "Arlisa's had tremendous success, both as a student-athlete and a coach, and we think she is the perfect candidate to take over our program."

"I'm really excited to start my first head coaching job," Hagan said. "Georgetown's reputation, both academically and athletically, speak for itself. To have the opportunity to coach in Washington and in the BIG EAST Conference is a challenge to which I look forward. I can't wait to get started."

During her four years at Florida, Hagan was responsible for training and skill development, as well as handling recruiting duties. In her first full year as recruiting coordinator, Hagan's class was ranked No. 2 in the country by PrepVolleyball.com, and she followed that up in 2005 with a class that was rated No. 10, quite a feat considering no other top-10 team had less than three commitments and the Gators had only two.

Hagan helped lead Florida to its first appearance in the national championship game in 2003 and was part of two Final Four appearances during her four years with the Gators. Florida finished 33-3 in 2005, its third 30-win season in the last four years. In addition, she coached players who combined for 14 All-America honors and 19 All-Southeastern Conference honors.

"We've been very fortunate to have a number of great people in this position that have helped us be successful over the years," Florida Head Coach Mary Wise said. "We will miss Arlisa but know this is a great opportunity for her. Georgetown and Arlisa are a perfect match."

Prior to her stint at Florida, Hagan helped lead American University to an impressive 52-8 record during her two seasons at the school. It went 14-0 in the Patriot League in 2001 and earned the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament after winning the Colonial Athletic Association conference title the previous season.

"Arlisa is one of the bright, young women in the game," said Joe Sagula, the head coach at North Carolina and the president of the American Volleyball Coaches Association. "She's had a wealth of experience in a short time. She's done an outstanding job in every program she's been associated with and she's played at the highest level and coached there with success too. I think as a recruiter, she's very sharp and I think she knows how to train teams at a high level. She's a great fit into the academic and athletic environment that Georgetown wants."

Before working at American, Hagan served as a graduate assistant coach at Virginia Tech during the 1994 and '95 seasons, earning a master's degree in education and student personnel services.

Hagan earned a bachelor's of arts degree in African American studies in 1993 from the University of Wisconsin, where she was a standout middle blocker for the school. She was a three-time All-Big Ten selection (1990-92) and a two-time All-Region pick (1990-91). She set Wisconsin career records for kills (1,495) and blocks (618) during her final year with the Badgers. Hagan was a member of Wisconsin's 1990 Big Ten Championship team and was a captain in her senior year.

Originally from Louisville, Kentucky, where she graduated from Kentucky Country Day School, Hagan currently resides in Washington, DC, with her husband, Simon Williams. The couple married on July 25, 2006.
