Georgetown Women's Volleyball Falls 3-0 to Virginia Tech at Hokie Invitational

BLACKSBURG, VA - The Georgetown University women's volleyball team fell 3-0 (30-16, 30-24, 30-16) to the Virginia Tech Hokies in opening day competition of the Hokie Invitational held at Cassell Coliseum.

Senior opposite side hitter Jenny Weed led the Hoyas (2-1) in the match with 10 kills, while senior outside hitter Rachel Nelson provided eight kills and four digs. Freshman Caitlin Boland finished with 19 assists. Junior Katie Esbrook led the offensive effort for the Hokies (1-0) with 11 kills and sophomore Amanda Cloyd turned in 14 digs defensive end.

Virginia Tech hit an impressive .352, while the Hoyas managed just .019. The Hokies also had a solid blocking effort, recording 10 blocks to the Hoyas' four.

In addition to Weed, Nelson and Boland, freshman Katherine Niesen registered four kills, and teammate Jessica Buffum had three. Buffum also tallied four digs. Sophomore libero Katie Nulty donated five digs to the Hoya cause.

In other action at the Hokie Invite, the Mississippi State Bulldogs won a tough four-game set, 30-28, 38-36, 30-24, and 34-32 against the Wisconsin-Milwaukee Panthers in the first match of the evening. Orshi Kriegel led the Bulldogs (2-0) Kriegel with 23 kills and 18 digs. Rachel Cooper had 16 kills and 19 digs, while Eva Kriegel had a triple-double with 12 kills, 41 assists and 15 digs. Cheryl Hegemann posted 23 kills and18 digs for the Panthers (2-2). Leanne Felsing had her third triple-double of the season with 14 kills, 16 assists and 20 digs.

Georgetown will meet Mississippi State at 10:00 a.m. tomorrow, then Wisconsin-Milwaukee in the first match of the evening session tomorrow night at 5:00 p.m.
